Join the Masters of the Environment Graduate Program as we build out this exciting program at CU Boulder!

The Assistant Director of Career and Professional Development will manage our Career Development Office and its career coaches, oversee strategic partnership development, including partnerships with prospective employers; lead alumni relations and communications; and oversee the creation and execution of workshops and other events to connect partners, students, alumni, and MENV program affiliates. The Assistant Director will also engage consistently with current MENV students, alumni, faculty, staff, advisory board, external partners, and CU administrative offices, including The Graduate School other campus units, and relevant entities external to CU.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Professional Development

  • Serve as Instructor of Record (development, delivery, and evaluation) of the MENV Capstone Innovation Lab course.
  • Develop and deliver integrated professional development and capstone curriculum for both in-person and remote graduate courses.
  • Plan and facilitate non-credit bearing professional development workshops.
  • Track, synthesize, and report out on key industry trends to stay up to date on professional development best practices to inform MENV curriculum and specialization core competencies, as well as CDO vision and programming.
  • Design content and deliver an innovative workshop portfolio, and manage recruitment, hiring, and oversight of new and existing workshop facilitators.
  • Manage the creation of professional development content for the CDO Resource Repository and the MENV website, LinkedIn page, and other communication platforms.

Strategic Employer Partnerships

  • Build and nurture relationships with a wide range of organizations across sectors and industries to increase the MENV network, develop capstone partnerships, and create recruitment pathways for MENV students and graduates.
  • Continuously audit existing strategies and programming, and identify new and innovative ways to connect with and engage prospective employers with current students and alumni.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with specialization leads, faculty, staff, and other team members to align program initiatives and meet broader MENV goals.
  • Design content and administer in-person and virtual presentations to prospective partners to elevate the presence of the program and increase engagement opportunities.

Career Services

  • Serve as the lead career coach for the CDO, providing one-on-one coaching sessions to students and alumni, designing CDO curriculum, services, and coaching best practices.
  • Design and oversee virtual and in person events (employer meet and greets, site visits, happy hours, panels, and networking events) to connect employers, students, and alumni with a professional network and job opportunities.
  • Oversee the design and distribution of the monthly IGNITE professional development newsletter and the weekly jobs digest.

Program Management

  • Manage operations of CDO providing instruction and services to over 200 MENV graduate students annually.
  • Manage and tracks an annual career and professional development budget of approximately $50,000.
  • Train, manage, mentor, and evaluate CDO team of two independent contractor career coaches and 1-2 graduate assistants.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement or efficiencies in recurring or daily functions or processes necessary for mission execution.
  • Develop and implement strategies meant to assist the program in meeting its critical goals and objectives in the most efficient manner possible.
  • Approve and allocate resources based on program priorities.
  • Evaluate and recommend changes to programming, policies or procedures.
  • Lead and direct the work of other employees and consultants and has full authority for personnel decisions.

Alumni Services & Engagement

  • Conceptualize and manage the execution of the alumni ‘arc of engagement’ to ensure all MENV alumni (currently over 200 graduates) feel connected and supported by the program and have opportunities to engage with and support MENV students.
  • Design, distribute, and analyze employment data surveys for all graduated cohorts, and share key trends and highlights with MENV program staff and faculty, and regularly update the website with relevant employment data content.
  • Oversee the design and distribution of the alumni newsletter on a quarterly basis.

What We Can Offer

Annual salary range for this position is $70,000 - $80,000. An allowance against relocation expenses may be available.

What We Require

  • A graduate degree from an accredited institution. A combination of education and/or relevant experience as described here may be substituted for a degree on a year-for-year basis. 
  • Three years of direct professional experience in higher education and a record of successful career coaching, and/or graduate student job placement.
  • Successful experience building effective strategic partnerships with external stakeholders.

  • Ability and willingness to take an energetic and creative approach to identifying employment options that are available for students and alumni, and be enthusiastic about facilitating individual introductions of students to potential employers.
  • Ability to manage priorities when working with multiple constituencies including campus staff, faculty, partners, students, and alumni.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to quickly establish rapport with internal and external partners.
  • Ability to work creatively and in a fast-moving environment, with an entrepreneurial, solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to work independently and with numerous diverse stakeholders.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong organizational skills.
  • Flexibility in working hours to accommodate evening and weekend events and programming.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Experience in the design, implementation, and delivery of graduate-level courses in professional career development and strategies, delivered via in-person and remote settings.
  • Experience training, managing, and evaluating a team.
  • Studies in environmental studies, sustainability, business, communications, or related fields.
  • Eight or more years of professional experience in the environmental, natural resources, energy, or sustainability industries, 
  • A record of successful employer engagement, corporate recruitment, network building, or similar professional experience.
  • A network of connections in Colorado and elsewhere that can be activated to develop new partnerships and expand the reach of the program.
