Job Summary

LASP encourages applications for a Mechanical Assembler to join our team. This position will be responsible for the assembly of precision optical/mechanical/electrical assemblies. You should possess extensive technical expertise to work from detailed drawings and instructions to perform these assemblies. 

Who We Are

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU) began in 1948, a decade before NASA. We are the world’s only academic research institute to have sent instruments to all eight planets and Pluto. 

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Perform Assembly of small and large scale aerospace structures, mechanisms, and optomechanical instrumentation for application in vacuum and space‐flight environments. Ability to work with standard laboratory electrical and mechanical test equipment, measurement equipment and small hand tools.
  • Participate in Reviews of drawings and FAI's designed for application in vacuum and space flight environments, this includes alignment features, hole dimensions, tight tolerance features, and overall part characteristics. Attend program meetings and reviews to help provide input to the program team for production.
  • Support Spaceflight Environmental testing including; Thermal (T-VAC), EMI/EMC Emissions Testing, Vibe/Shock/Acoustics, etc.
  • Provide technical solutions to a wide range of problems. Advises and participates in assembly design in collaboration with the Engineer. Works directly with an engineer to devise solutions to problems.
  • Take directions through a combination of both verbal & written fabrication and assembly instructions from Cognizant Engineer or Manager.
  • Provide functional support during instrument testing and integration including calibration testing, vibe testing, Emissions testing, and Thermal Testing.
  • Help maintain lab cleanliness, efficiency, safety guidelines, and calibration of equipment. Help identify supplies needing to be ordered for the lab area.

What We Require

  • Technical or engineering degree. Trade of experience for the degree may be accepted.
  • Three years of experience of previous hands-on experience with Aerospace assemblies and requirements.

What You Will Need

  • Ability to verify mechanical parts dimensions through inspection/understanding of GD&T.
  • Knowledgeable and some training in one or several other areas including polymerics, machining, metrology, and electrical assembly.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Experience with clean room and ESD requirements.
  • Machine shop experience including CAD/CAM.
  • Five to eight years of experience of previous hands-on experience with Aerospace assemblies and requirements.
