Job Summary

The Network Engineer in the Office of Information Technology (OIT) supports campus routing and wireless configurations, design layout, and troubleshooting 802.3 and 802.11 configuration issues. This role provides support for network services related to customer issues, conducts research to ensure future network deployments are handled in an expedient fashion, and performs predictive modeling to facilitate 802.11 standards based Wi-Fi designs for deployment of wireless services into campus buildings.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Network Service Response 

  • Respond to network outages related to operating systems, configuration software, and inter-connectivity issues. 
  • Respond to and solve Service-Now trouble tickets related to customer issues involving security, configuration, and connectivity issues. 
  • Assist with developing department guidelines for troubleshooting service related issues. Ensure service tickets are prioritized accordingly and completed in a timely manner. 
  • Strive for highest levels of customer service based on various survey results. 
Network Service Operations 

  • Perform campus wide routing and wireless support including configuration, pre-production deployment testing, deployment, inter-connectivity design layout, record keeping, and layer 1/layer 2/layer 3 troubleshooting based on minimal direction. 
  • Ensure network backbone equipment is operational and updated as needed. 
  • Facilitate access point configuration in response to new/change requests for Wi-Fi services. 
  • Support physical infrastructure group in maintaining networking connectivity at the 802.11 wireless services level using Cisco NCS-Prime management tools and routing protocols at the router configuration line. 
Predictive Wireless Design Services

  • Perform 3-dimensional radio frequency predictive modeling design per 802.11 standards to deploy upgraded Wi-Fi services into campus buildings. 
  • Use specialized software tools and training provided by the Network Engineering & Operations department to facilitate this process. 
  • Process includes: onsite meeting with customers for application and coverage requirements, conduct on-site RF sample readings to compliment design tool, perform predictive 3-Dimensional Wi-Fi design with specialized modeling tool/s, and validate Wi-Fi design for accuracy post implementation.
Construction Documentation Management

  • Review, track, and respond to construction documentation related to deploying wireless services into campus buildings for various types of construction related projects.
Professional Development 

  • Maintain proficiency and acquire new technical knowledge by reading technical journals, manuals, electronics mailing lists, newsgroups, and standards documents, attend seminars and classes, participate in discussions with colleagues and consult with vendors.

After hours on-call rotation will be required for this position.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in Computer Science or related field. A combination of education and related experience can substitute for the degree on a year for year basis. 
  • 2 years of experience supporting IEEE 802.3 network protocols in a large enterprise environment specifically related to Cisco routers.
  • 2 years of experience supporting IEEE 802.11 wireless based LAN networks in a large enterprise environment specifically related to on-site analysis and field RF verification.

  • Ability to work well with others in a collaborative manner.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Experience with Cisco wireless controllers and Access Points.
  • Experience with Cisco 6807 router platforms.
  • Ability to document and diagram complex network environments and topologies. 
  • Managing Enterprise Networks with Cisco Prime Infrastructure v3.0- (MENPI).
  • Experience with CAD-CAM software applications.
  • Certified Wireless Network Administration Certification (CWNA).
  • Cisco CCNP Certification.
