Job Summary

The Office of Information Technology at CU Boulder invites applications for a Network Operations Center Analyst! This position will join the Operations unit in OIT and with guidance from senior level staff, this position will determine, maintain and expand switching structure including wireless access points, implement new designs of the network infrastructure, and provide operational support for the existing network infrastructure, installation/support for VoIP and analog services and cable TV services. The person who fills this position must be able to work outside normal business hours, participate in an on-call rotation and drive a university vehicle.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Network Hardware Installation and Configuration:

  • Under the guidance of Senior staff, install and configure campus-wide network switches and wireless network equipment, which requires use of a university vehicle and the ability to distinguish between colors. This requires knowledge of and the ability to navigate coding and command lines necessary to access the switches, routers, voice media packs, and access point configurations.
  • Engage in deployment and testing of switches and Wi-Fi Access Points (AP), and UPS systems.
  • Document configuration and implementation plans, and troubleshoot installation and configuration issues using networking professional standards.
  • Determine appropriate switch and AP configurations.

Troubleshooting and Customer Service:

  • Review, process, and complete routine customer Help Desk requests and issues. In many cases this will require onsite customer meetings and testing on site for wired, and wireless, VoIP, analog, and coax connectivity. This entails understanding client devices/applications, understanding correct communications between the device and the Wi-Fi services/network jacks, and ability to make suggestions for customer device resolution.
  • Complex requests will require collaboration/escalation to senior staff members. Requests must be processed in a timely manner and interaction with customers requires professional attitude and ability to translate technical information into easy to understand terms.

Existing Network Component Monitoring, Repair and Upgrade:

  • Respond to switch and Access Point outages related to operating systems, configuration software, inter-connectivity issues and to customer trouble reports related to switch port and Wi-Fi issues involving security, configuration, rogue DHCP, and connectivity issues.
  • Troubleshoot the layer1/layer 2 network connectivity, O/S, switch, port, AP configuration/s.
  • Collaborate with the senior engineer to facilitate department guidelines for troubleshooting-related issues and in determining the source of the failure, if the repair can be resolved, and if device replacement is the appropriate solution.

Installation and Repair of Network Connections:

  • Data, voice, and coax activations and repairs including changing the switch port parameters to meet the needs of the installation and performing diagnostics of the port problems on edge switches and wiring from switches to jacks.
  • Update work order and database information upon completion of order and facilitate switch port configuration in response to new service or change requests.
  • Determine the correct subnet information for port configurations.

Professional Development:

  • Augment skills with a training/conference that will help develop you on a professional level and increase your knowledge about new technologies.

Other Duties:

  • As defined by management requirements to meet changing/project network services.

What You Should Know

  • This position is in a hybrid work situation, working primarily on site, 4 days per week. During the training period, this role will be fully on-site.
  • Occasional need for out of hours work related to a service incident on campus and/or special events staffing.
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

What We Can Offer

The annual hiring range for this full-time position is $58,000 - $63,880.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, engineering or a related field. Relevant work experience as listed below may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the degree.
  • Functional knowledge of Networking switches, wireless access points, UPS systems, and monitoring tools.
  • Must have a valid U.S. Driver’s License.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • One year of experience:
    • With Network monitoring and alerting using industry standard tools such as SolarWinds, Nagios, or similar.
    • Related to the configuration, deployment, and testing of network switches.
  • Familiarity with CU-Boulder campus buildings.
  • Experience with developing and working with Excel spreadsheets.
