Job Summary

The CU Police Department welcomes applications for a Police Media Duplication Specialist. Under general supervision of the Records Manager, provides complete case files of discoverable materials to the District Attorney's Office and duplicates digital media as requested, in accordance with the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) and Colorado Criminal Justice Records Act (CCJRA). Performs duties in a manner consistent with the stated values of the organization.

The CUPD is a full-service police agency with 46 sworn and 36 non-sworn employees providing community-based public safety services to a diverse community of 36,000 affiliates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year long. Every year the department responds to approximately 20,000 calls for service and ensures the safety and security for all of their PAC-12 Conference athletic events with attendance at football games exceeding 50,000 fans. Patrolling the campus by foot, bicycle, motorcycle, and vehicle, the CU-Boulder police work diligently with the University community and surrounding agencies to ensure a prompt and coordinated law enforcement response.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Media Management
  • Duplicate digital media to include Body-Worn Cameras, In-Car Videos, photographs, and audio files (telephone, radio, etc.) as requested by Investigators, the District Attorney's Office, Defense Attorneys or the general public. Ensures media is provided in accordance with CORA and CCJRA. 
  • Edit footage from various recording devices to redact protected information and images prior to public release. 
  • Extract detailed evidence obtained from audio and video media sources to assist investigative efforts.
Case Investigation Support
  • Liaison with Police Records, Investigations, Patrol and Dispatch personnel to create case files of discoverable materials for specific state charges. Provides the case file through the eDiscovery portal to the District Attorney's Office.
Equipment Maintenance
  •  Operate and maintain agency related audio-visual and related electronic equipment and software. 
  •  Create compilation videos from various media sources to create a coherent complement to raw DVR footage.   
Other Duties as Assigned
  • Testify in criminal or civil court or other public hearings to verify the integrity of evidentiary data collected or protocols followed for collection and redaction in order to authenticate such media. 
  • Determine and troubleshoot unknown video and audio file types utilizing in-house and online resources to determine how to view and run files.

What We Can Offer

The anticipated starting salary range starts at $44,000, commensurate with experience.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Valid Colorado Driver's License preferred for travelling to court and hearings.
  • Must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check, polygraph and psychological exam prior to commencing employment.

What You Will Need

  • Knowledge of the discovery requirements as outlined in Rule 16 of the Colorado Rules of Criminal Procedure.
  • Knowledge of and ability to appropriately apply CORA and CCJRA to release of Police media.
  • Working knowledge of digital media duplication theories and practices.
  • Working knowledge of Windows based computers and applications.
  • Working knowledge of police liability issues.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships. Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.  
  • Ability to coordinate activities with other agencies, organizations and individuals.  
  • Ability to effectively implement philosophies, methods, policies and procedures that will assist in the achievement of Department goals.  
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State of Colorado and Town laws. 
  • Ability to work well with others and independently without direct supervision.  
  • Visual and hearing ability to identify relevant audio and video footage in the performance of duties.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Bachelors degree in criminal justice or related field. 
  • At least three years of experience in duplicating files of discoverable materials as they relate to state traffic, and criminal charges. 
  • Be familiar with police body-worn cameras and using the e-discovery portal.
  • One year experience in creating case files of discoverable materials as they relate to state traffic and criminal charges; or one year experience in related digital media duplication work; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
