Job Summary

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado has a postdoctoral position in computational social science, natural language process, and human-centered machine.

The postdoc will collaborate with the strong NLP/CSS group at CU and work on independent projects. The postdoc will travel to conferences for networking and to present relevant publications as appropriate. The initial appointment is for a term of 1 calendar year, which may be renewed for 1 additional calendar year assuming satisfactory progress.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Your efforts and accomplishments will be assessed according to the following formula: 67% research/creative work and 33% teaching in the department of Computer Science Postbacc Program, College of Engineering & Applied Science, with the University of Colorado Boulder. Your normal classroom teaching assignments will include teaching three online courses in the Computer Science Postbacc Program.

Human-centered computing has a long history at CU Boulder, beginning with professors like Peter Polson, Tom Landauer, Gerhard Fischer, Clayton Lewis, Skip Ellis and Walter Kintsch. Today’s faculty and students continue this legacy, and can be found in academic homes across the university. Four of CU’s faculty have been elected to the CHI Academy, including one SIGCHI Lifetime Achievement Award, and two have received the ACM CHI Social Impact Award.

We conduct research in social computing, health informatics, human-computer interaction (HCI), computer-supported cooperative learning, graphical programming, broadening CS participation, computer animation, game programming, crisis informatics and many other topics.

Our NLP group, including Mans Hulden, Jim Martin, Martha Palmer, Michael Paul, and Chenhao Tan, works on a wide range of areas ranging from computational semantics that uncovers the meaning of words and sentences to pragmatics that investigates how humans use language in social interactions. The latter also connects with a broad, vibrant community interested in computational social science to study human behavior at Boulder, including Jed Brubaker, Aaron Clauset, Casey Fiesler, Brian Keegan, Dan Larremore, Leysia Palen, and many more. 

What We Can Offer

The expected salary is between $60,000 and $65,000.
