Job Summary

The job will involve studying the etching of thin films using thermal atomic layer etching (ALE).  In particular, the project will focus on the identification of etch products during thermal ALE using quadrupole mass spectrometry.

Who We Are

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Colorado Boulder emphasizes knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry, including atomic and molecular theory, the states of matter and reactivities and properties of chemical substances. Students study the basic subfields of chemistry, such as organic, physical, analytical, and inorganic chemistry, all while developing the mathematical skills to understand fundamental chemical relationships and to manipulate experimental data. Graduates also learn safe chemical practices, including handling waste, safety equipment, assembling chemical apparatus and designing experiments.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Study gas phase reaction products during thermal atomic layer etch (ALE) reactions.  Utilize a new apparatus designed to study etch products employing a reaction chamber, a molecular beam expansion region and a differentially-pumped quadrupole mass spectrometer.  Develop an understanding of etch products for various etchants under various reaction conditions.  Interact with the industrial sponsor of this project on conference calls that occur every month.  Prepare slides in advance of these conference calls for useful discussion.  Interact with etching team including graduate students and other postdocs to discuss results and various issues regarding etching.

What We Require

  • Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Chemistry or related field (materials science, engineering, or physics) is required.

What You Will Need

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and interpersonal problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Three or more years laboratory experience in vacuum science and technology and a strong track record of research.
