Job Summary
We solicit applications for two postdoctoral associates. The successful candidates will perform research in theoretical quantum physics under the supervision of Professors Victor Gurarie, Michael Hermele and Ana Maria Rey, as part of the Simons Collaboration on Ultra-Quantum Matter (UQM Collaboration) and the Center for Theory of Quantum Matter (CTQM). Both positions are anticipated to begin fall 2024. The research of one position is anticipated to have a substantial focus on synthetic quantum matter in ultra-cold atomic, molecular and optical systems, and related topics, while the research of the other position may be on any topics within the broad scope of the UQM Collaboration. Engaging in collaborative research with members of the UQM Collaboration, both at Boulder and at other institutions, is strongly encouraged.
Who We Are
The Center for Theory of Quantum Matter is a vibrant and cutting-edge community of theoretical physicists and mathematicians with expertise that spans the fields of condensed matter physics, atomic/molecular/optical physics, high energy physics, nuclear physics, quantum information, and mathematical physics. In addition to Victor Gurarie, Michael Hermele and Ana Maria Rey, the faculty affiliated with CTQM are: Christopher Akers, Oliver DeWolfe, Xun Gao, Murray Holland, Emanuel Knill, Andrew Lucas, Rahul Nandkishore, Ethan Neil, Markus Pflaum, Leo Radzihovsky and Paul Romatschke.
The UQM Collaboration is a network of students, postdocs and faculty across 12 universities dedicated to advancing the theory of highly entangled many-body quantum matter, including topological and fracton matter, strongly interacting gapless phases including quantum critical matter and non-Fermi liquids, non-equilibrium quantum systems, and synthetic quantum matter in a variety of platforms. The Collaboration employs approaches traditionally associated with several different sub-fields of theoretical physics, including condensed matter theory, atomic/molecular/optical (AMO) theory, quantum information theory, high energy theory, and mathematical physics. In addition to Victor Gurarie, Michael Hermele and Ana Maria Rey at CU Boulder, the faculty affiliated with the Collaboration are: Leon Balents (UCSB), Xie Chen (Caltech), Matthew P. A. Fisher (UCSB), Victor Galitski (Maryland), Andreas Karch (UT Austin), Michael Levin (Chicago), John McGreevy (UCSD), Subir Sachdev (Harvard), Nathan Seiberg (IAS), T. Senthil (MIT), Shu-Heng Shao (Stony Brook), Dam Thanh Son (Chicago), Ashvin Vishwanath (Harvard), Xiao-Gang Wen (MIT), Michael Zaletel (UC Berkeley).
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Perform research at CTQM, under the supervision of Victor Gurarie, Michael Hermele and Ana Maria Rey.
- You will be expected to participate actively in the UQM Collaboration and in CTQM, including attending meetings of the UQM Collaboration.
- Engaging in collaborative research with members of the UQM Collaboration, both at Boulder and at other institutions, is strongly encouraged.
What We Can Offer
The intended starting salary will be between $60,000.00 - 72,000.00 per year.
Benefits
Be Statements
What We Require
- A PhD in physics or a related field.
What You Will Need
- A strong background in research in one or more relevant areas of theoretical science.
What We Would Like You to Have
- A strong track record of research publications and preprints on topics within the scope of the UQM Collaboration.
- A demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
- A desire to participate actively in the UQM Collaboration and the Center for Theory of Quantum Matter, and (for the position focused on synthetic quantum matter) an interest in collaboration with relevant experimental groups.
Special Instructions
To apply, please submit the following materials:
- Resume or CV, including a complete list of your publications and preprints.
- Cover letter addressed to the Search Committee briefly describing your qualifications, professional goals, and which faculty at CU Boulder and within the UQM Collaboration you envision collaboration with.
- Essay. This is your research statement and should consist of a reasonably brief discussion of your research expertise, interests and future plans.
If you are selected as the finalist, your degree will be verified by the CU Boulder Campus Human Resources department using an approved online vendor. If your degree was obtained outside of the United States, please submit a translated version as an optional attachment.
Review of applications will begin on November 6th, 2023, and continue until both positions are filled.
Note: Application materials will not be accepted via email. For consideration, applications must be submitted through CU Boulder Jobs.
