Job Summary

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to work with NIST researchers to implement and characterize a new type of Over-the-Air (OTA) test chamber that replicates complex industrial wireless-propagation channels.  The test chamber will allow repeatable testing of future millimeter-wave wireless Industrial Internet of Things devices and support NIST’s research in wireless communications and smart manufacturing.  The prospective researcher will use state-of-the-art instrumentation and extend advanced NIST-developed calibrations and analysis techniques for interpretation of the measurement results.

Who We Are

The Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) is a special partnership between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Colorado Boulder.  PREP provides research opportunities to CU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in NIST labs to gain research experience alongside NIST scientists.

The particular group that needs a researcher is the Shared Spectrum Metrology Group in the RF Technology Division at NIST.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Configure the Over-the-Air test chamber to emulate channel conditions of a highly reflective, spatially diverse factory environment.
  • Apply NIST synthetic-aperture methods to allow 3D characterization of the test chamber.
  • Work as a team to apply and extend statistical-analysis and uncertainty techniques.
  • Provide technical input in formulating research solutions to problems that have been recognized as critical obstacles to progress in the program.
  • Studies will result in a series of publications, providing important new methods and best practices to the wireless-communications and smart-manufacturing communities.
  • Present technical results.

What We Require

  • PhD in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a field related.
  • Experience with electrical measurement instrumentation such as arbitrary waveform generators, network analyzers and digitizers.
  • Experience with statistical analysis of measured data, such as the computation of uncertainty.
  • Ability to code with, or learn to code with, Matlab, LabView, Python.
  • Ability to perform simple machining such as fixturing is desirable.
  • Experience with over-the-air measurements, which may include the use of anechoic chambers, reverberation chambers, or radio-propagation measurements is desirable.
  • Past publication of technical research.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Over-the-air measurements, which may include the use of anechoic chambers, reverberation chambers, or radio-propagation measurements.
  • Operation, configuration and deployment of instrumentation that is used to characterize the performance of wireless systems such as spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and base-station emulators.
  • Statistical analysis of measured data, including an understanding of the treatment of correlated data.
  • Use of commercially available instrument control and analysis software.
  • Publication of technical research.
  • Work collaboratively.
