Job Summary

The Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) encourages applications for a Postdoctoral Associate! This position will craft, simulate, and possibly fabricate a Josephson junction (JJ)-based neural network that can process microwave signals at speeds greater than 20 Gbps. In particular, we will test channel de-embedding using this high-speed JJ neural network. This position will also develop a variable time delay element combining THz spoof surface plasmon polariton waveguides with programmable magnetic Josephson junctions. Such an element has the potential to enable new types of spiking neural networks that operate at 100s of GHz.

Who We Are

PREP is a special partnership between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and CU Boulder. PREP provides research opportunities to CU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers with a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in NIST labs to gain research experience alongside NIST scientists.

The particular group that needs a researcher is the Spin Electronics Group under the Quantum Electromagnetics Division at NIST.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  1. Develop a circuit-level Josephson junction neural network model that simulates communications channel de-embedding at THz frequencies.
  2. Design a circuit layout transferrable to the Boulder Microfab tools for eventual fabrication.
  3. If needed, develop THz testing resources for fabricated circuits.

The salary range is $66,000 - $75,420 annually.

What We Require

Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field. Experience in both traditional microwave communications circuit design and next generation surface-plasmon THz circuit design. More specifically, experience in radar and telecommunications signal processing, radar algorithm development, radar, and terahertz systems, terahertz component modeling, fabrication, and characterization is greatly desired. 

What We Would Like You To Have

Experience in NEMS device design, fabrication, and testing.
