Job Summary

The Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) encourages applications for a Postdoctoral Associate. This position focuses on the research and development of parametric amplifier circuits and microwave characterization tools for quantum-limited amplifiers. In addition, the candidate will investigate methods for mitigating the deleterious effects of nonequilibrium quasiparticles in superconducting qubits.

Who We Are

PREP is a special partnership between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and CU Boulder. PREP provides research opportunities to CU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers with a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in NIST labs to gain research experience alongside NIST scientists.

The particular group that needs a researcher is the Advanced Microwave Photonics Group under the Applied Physics Division at NIST.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Develop theoretical models for fundamental limits to “quantum” amplifier performance.
  • Design and test new wideband and high dynamic range parametric amplifiers.
  • Develop a robust workflow for design and test, including automating/programming data acquisition of cryogenic measurements.

The salary range is $67,000 - $93,200 annually.

What We Require

  • Ph.D. in physics, quantum measurement, electrical engineering, microwave engineering, or related field, including a focus on experimental condensed matter, quantum computing, or similar.
  • Experience with superconducting circuit design, cleanroom fabrication, dilution refrigeration, low noise measurement (including dc transport and/or microwave measurement), programming (Matlab or Python) with emphasis on data acquisition/analysis.
  • Experience in mechanical design (solid modeling, e.g., Solidworks, Inventor, or equivalent) and assembly.
