Job Summary

The MBEAM Laboratory is seeking a post-doctoral associate to conduct molecular beam-surface and crossed-beams scattering experiments relevant to hypersonic flows and spacecraft interactions with the residual atmosphere in the low Earth orbital (LEO) environment.

Who We Are

In the past decade, AMReC has gained a worldwide reputation as a leader in the development of analysis and design methods for coupled multi-field problems, particularly in the context of aeroelasticity. The methods pioneered by AMReC faculty have become standard tools in academia and industry for analyzing complete aircraft configurations. This work is complemented by the development of high-performance parallel computing strategies. In past years, additional focus areas have included the development of models and design methods for multi-functional material systems and micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). The latter two research areas are considered to be key components of next-generation technologies in aerospace, mechanical, and bio-medical engineering.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Responsibilities will be drawn from the following list, depending on the interests and skills of the individual.

  • Conduct atomic-oxygen exposures of materials to simulate space environmental effects on materials in low Earth orbit.
    • Prepare and mount samples.
    • Expose samples to required atomic-oxygen fluence.
    • Analyze samples with various surface analysis techniques: profilometry, SEM, AFM, XPS.
    • Prepare reports.
  • Conduct molecular beam-surface scattering experiments with a universal crossed molecular beams apparatus.
    • Reactive and inelastic scattering of atomic oxygen on carbon and carbon and ceramic materials.
    • Inelastic scattering of helium atoms on aluminum, glass, and Teflon surfaces.
    • Analyze data, including the derivation of product translational energy distributions and angular distributions of scattered product flux.
    • Prepare reports as well as manuscripts for publication.
  • Conduct crossed molecular beams experiments using mass spectrometric and laser-based probes of products.
    • Reactive and inelastic scattering of oxygen and nitrogen atoms with O, N, N2, O2, NO, and CO.
    • Analyze data, including the derivation of center-of-mass velocity-flux maps (i.e., differential cross sections).
    • Prepare reports as well as manuscripts for publication.
  • Daily tasks, including but not limited to:
    • Maintenance of vacuum hardware.
    • Maintenance of electronics components, lasers, optical spectrometers, and mass spectrometers.
    • Conducting experiments.
    • Organizing laboratory.
    • Cataloging laboratory equipment.
    • Ordering supplies.
    • Analyzing data using commercial and custom computer programs.
    • Providing support in the preparation of publications and presentations.
    • Interacting with Minton Lab members, external collaborators, external sponsors, and facilities personnel.
    • Assisting in the training of new group members.

What We Can Offer

The annual salary for this position is $65,000.

What We Require

  • Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, or engineering plus knowledge of high vacuum techniques and molecular beam scattering experiments.
