Job Summary

This position will support a fundamental research project on multi-scale topology optimization for 3D printed composites. The postdoctoral research associate is expected to develop multi-scale analysis and sensitivity analysis algorithms for an isogeometric formulation of the extended finite element method for non-linear elastic problems. This work requires expertise in topology optimization, finite element modeling, and software development. Preferred expertise includes level set topology optimization, isogeometric finite element analysis, and advanced coding skills in C or C++.

Who We Are

In the past decade, AMReC has gained a worldwide reputation as a leader in the development of analysis and design methods for coupled multi-field problems, particularly in the context of aeroelasticity. The methods pioneered by AMReC faculty have become standard tools in academia and industry for analyzing complete aircraft configurations. This work is complemented by the development of high-performance parallel computing strategies. In past years, additional focus areas have included the development of models and design methods for multi-functional material systems and micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). The latter two research areas are considered to be key components of next-generation technologies in aerospace, mechanical, and bio-medical engineering.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Develop multi-scale finite element analysis methods based on homogenization and multi-grid approaches.
  • Develop multi-scale approaches to describe multi-scale geometries via level set methods.
  • Implement finite element and geometry modeling methods into an in-house parallel code that is written in C++ and based on MPI.
  • Conduct numerical experiments and design optimization studies to verify analysis and optimization capabilities with project relevant examples.
  • Write technical reports and publications.
  • Assist PhD student in their work related to the project.

Salary is $65,000 per year.

What We Require

  • PhD in mechanical, civil or aerospace engineering or related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in computational mechanics, the finite element method, and topology optimization, such as scientific publications or PhD thesis in these fields.
  • Knowledge in at least one of the following programming languages: C, C++, or FORTRAN.

What You Will Need

  • Ability to perform research driven by specific project goals and milestones.
  • Ability to develop software in a team of faculty, PhD students, and postdoc.
  • Knowledge of past and contemporary research in computational mechanics and geometry modeling.
  • Knowledge of past and contemporary research in topology optimization.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
