Job Summary
The Mountain Limnology Laboratory (MLL) at the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research at University of Colorado Boulder is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to work on a project jointly funded by the U.S. Geological Survey Climate Research and Development program and North Central Climate Adaptation Science Center. The primary project centers around synthesizing and interpreting 40+ years of long-term biogeochemical, hydrologic, and meteorological data from the Loch Vale Watershed (LVWS), Green Lakes Valley (Niwot Ridge LTER), and other high-elevation wilderness lakes in the southern Rocky Mountains. Interpretation will range from site-specific to global This is a CU Boulder, full time, exempt, fully benefitted, salaried position for two years, with possible extension pending funding. The preferred start date is September of 2024, but exact start date is negotiable.
Who We Are
As the University's oldest institute, INSTAAR has a long history of responding to pressing environmental issues including climate change. Our traditional focus has been on alpine, Arctic, and Antarctic regions, where effects of global change are especially pronounced. In recent decades, our research has broadened to include environmental challenges that span local, regional, and global scales. INSTAAR’s research activities integrate field studies, state-of-the-art laboratory experiments, sample analysis, and numerical and laboratory modeling. Our field sites are located across all seven continents and the world's oceans.
Our expertise across disciplines helps us generate influential science that can inform public and policy decisions and move us toward a more sustainable society. INSTAAR's national and international research leadership is augmented by exceptional strength in graduate education and bringing undergraduates into the research process.
JEDI statement:
We aim to create an environment where individuals feel safe, heard, and encouraged to be themselves, and where all INSTAAR members understand their important roles in our anti-racism plan. We are working to dismantle systemic biases within our institute and within our larger institutional and scientific contexts, align the demographics of INSTAAR with those of our state and nation, and reduce barriers to living in Boulder and conducting scientific research at the University of Colorado Boulder.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
In addition to leading and co-authoring synthetic papers, the scientist will work with a team to create visualizations and tools that can help interpret the science for a broad audience and make the data publicly accessible. We anticipate that the scientist will gain new, international collaborators, develop new skills, communicate and engage with public land managers, and take part in professional development activities (e.g., Global Lake Ecological Observatory (GLEON) and other all hands’ meetings, relevant conferences, student mentoring, educational programs). The scientist will work collaboratively with the MLL research team to create a SQL database for historic data dating from 1982 from the LVWS and ongoing collection of high-frequency sensor data. This project provides an uncommon training opportunity for exciting data-driven research and building a professional network that includes scientists and Federal decision makers.
What We Can Offer
The salary range for this position is $65,000 - $75,000 annually.

What We Require
The candidate must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., ecosystem science, limnology, biogeochemistry, hydrology, alpine ecology, or oligotrophic ecosystems are highly desirable).
What You Will Need
A strong statistical background (e.g. time series modeling, multivariate modeling). Passion for and experience in collaborating with a diversity of colleagues, both remotely and in person, are essential. Written and oral communication skills are essential.
What We Would Like You to Have
Skills in data science (such as AI/ML). Experience working with or building relational databases (e.g., SQL).
