Job Summary
A position is available in the Plasma and Quantum Group (PQG) in the Center for Integrated Plasma Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. In this position, you will work with Prof. Yuan Shi to conduct theoretical and computational research in one or more of the following areas:
- laser-plasma interaction,
- relativistic-quantum plasmas, or
- quantum computing for plasma physics.
The position starts in 2025 on a mutually agreed date. The position is for two years, with a possibility to extend to three years, depending on performance and availability of funds.
Who We Are
The Center for Integrated Plasma Studies (CIPS) is a research center within the Physics Department at the University of Colorado Boulder. Members of the PQG perform cutting edge research that uncovers the under explored synergy between plasma and quantum physics, with the aim to break through bottlenecks in plasma technology, theoretical physics, and scientific computing. Our group culture is supportive, positive and accountable. Our research is ambitious, high quality, and communicative. We place a strong emphasis on scientific productivity and career development, and we value a healthy work-life balance. We encourage applicants from all backgrounds to apply.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Conduct independent and original research, which includes, but not limited to the following topics:
- Using Wigner-Moyal formalism to develop a ray-based description of nonlinear wave-wave interactions in nonuniform and magnetized plasmas.
- Using quantum field theory to develop a many-body description of relativistic-quantum plasmas.
- Developing quantum algorithms for atomic physics problems in a plasma environment.
- Perform theoretical analysis and/or develop computer codes.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.
- Present at conferences and workshops.
- Mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
What We Can Offer
The start base salary for this full-time position is $68-$72k annually, depending on experience, plus additional benefits. The salary will be inflated annually at a 2%-3% rate. Additional raise is possible depending on performance. The position is in-person, but remote options may be discussed. An additional relocation assistance stipend may be authorized.
