Job Summary
The University of Colorado encourages applications for a Pre-Transfer Advisor! This is a professional position designed to enhance the admissions process for prospective and newly admitted transfer students. The position will be housed in the Office of Undergraduate Education, reporting to the Director of Transfer Success Initiatives, and will include close ties to the Office of Admissions. Pre-Transfer Advisors work directly with prospective and newly admitted transfer students to help them explore program options, understand transfer course/credit applicability, determine estimated time to degree, etc. empowering students to make informed decisions about their admission and academic path. Pre-Transfer Advisors are expected to build a broad knowledge base of requirements and content for departments across campus and be able to make knowledgeable recommendations to both students and staff regarding particular transfer student situations.
This is a position that focuses on the overall experience of transfer students and works to support the process for individual students wherever possible. Pre-Transfer Advisors will build partnerships across campus and connect regularly with the variety of faculty, staff, and student leaders who have a role in the transfer process at CU Boulder. They will collaborate with campus partners to facilitate a successful transition to the university for transfer students.
Additionally, Pre-Transfer Advisors liaise with their assigned Colorado community colleges and contribute to efforts to improve CU Boulder and Colorado community college partnerships. In collaboration with the Transfer Admissions team, Pre-Transfer Advisors are responsible for representing CU Boulder at CO community college transfer fairs, events, tabling visits, advisor updates, etc. Pre-Transfer Advisors also participate in on campus and virtual Admissions events.
A successful Pre-Transfer Advisor is student-centered and demonstrates strong communication skills. They are flexible and agile, able to respond productively to varying student situations and continually evolving university policies, programs, and procedures. Pre-Transfer Advisors should be team oriented, while able to work independently. They are committed to continual learning, growth, and innovation.
Who We Are
The Office of Undergraduate Education (UE) is a campus office reporting to the Provost. Its charge is to examine the entire undergraduate student experience, assess outcomes, identify gaps, and launch and support student-facing campus initiatives. Current key projects in UE include a focus on first-year academic programs with the development of First Year Seminars; the coordination of undergraduate academic policies; the development of a coordinated campus advising structure; and the coordination and assessment of campus retention and persistence initiatives. We are currently working on a two-year initiative, Foundations of Excellence, which is focused on optimizing the first-year experience of our undergraduates.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Facilitate individual meetings for prospective and newly admitted transfer students (via scheduled appointments, drop-ins, Zoom, phone, and email interactions):
- Assist students in planning for and making informed decisions about a choice of major, intended college outcomes, and potential career or graduate school direction.
- Help students to navigate CU Boulder's systems, academic processes, and policies.
- Work with students to personalize their academic path.
- Connect students with relevant campus resources.
- Interact with students’ overall support network, including families.
- Utilize advising and admissions technology systems to complete related administrative tasks.
- Participate in on campus and virtual Transfer Admissions events.
- Travel to Colorado community colleges in assigned territory to outreach to students via tabling, fairs, events, and individual appointments.
- Teach FYXP 3000: Transfer Success Seminar, a 1-credit, 7-week graded transitions course for new transfer students, as needed.
Develop Advising & Departmental Partnerships
- Liaise with departmental/college/school/program advising partners including regular meetings, email or phone check-ins, etc.
- Build and maintain relationships with community college advising and Transfer Center colleagues to coordinate in-state visits, offer ongoing support and training, and serve as a referral point for their students.
- Contribute to the planning and execution of transfer events, including but not limited to CU & CC Connection, CU @ Community College events, etc.
- Collaborate with campus and community college partners to advocate for transfer students and improve the transfer student experience.
- Serve on cross-campus committees as necessary.
Strategic Planning & Student Success Initiatives
- Planning and collaboration with the Transfer Initiatives Team, the Office of Undergraduate Education, and the Office of Admissions, including regular team meetings, trainings, and evaluation.
Professional Development & Campus Engagement
- Participate in campus-wide, OUE, Advising/Student Success community, etc. professional development/training and community programs.
- Engage in transfer related professional development opportunities including but not limited to conferences, coursework, and research.
What You Should Know
- Hybrid work schedule may be possible.
- Some evening and weekend hours.
- Travel to Colorado community colleges required. Must provide your own transportation, mileage will be reimbursed.

- Bachelor’s Degree and one (1) year of professional advising or closely related experience in a higher education setting.

What We Would Like You to Have
- Three years of professional advising experience in a higher education setting.
- Master’s Degree.
- Knowledge of the transfer student experience and/or experience working with transfer students.
- Experience with student success initiatives.
