The Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) encourages applications for a Professional Research Assistant/Senior Professional Research Assistant!
This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) Professional Research Experience Program (PREP). NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.
As an engineer/developer, the selected applicant will be part of a team of engineers and researchers conducting research and development (R&D) activities focused on accelerating the development of indoor mapping, tracking, and navigation capabilities for first responders.

Who We Are
PREP is a special partnership between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Colorado Boulder. PREP provides research opportunities to CU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in NIST labs to gain research experience alongside NIST scientists.
The particular group that needs a researcher is the Advanced Communications Research Group under the Public Safety Communications Research Division at NIST.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Create relationships with local public safety representatives, develop cooperative research projects related to indoor mapping with mobile lidar scanning systems, execute and report on such projects;
- Collect data using a mobile lidar scanning system, process the acquired data;
- Collaborate with team members in the development of Augmented Reality software for the display of mapping and tracking data;
- Utilize an OptiTrack motion capture system to test infrastructure free indoor localization systems; develop software in support of this system;
- Utilize a total station theodolite to conduct measurements related to ground truth measurements and georeferencing;
- Work with the PSCR Lab Operations team to coordinate and document the deployment of hardware and software capabilities required to support the team's R&D activities;
- Other hardware/software tasks as required; and
- Work independently and as part of a diverse team of researchers and support team members to meet the mission goals of the Public Safety Communications Research Division at NIST.

Purpose: The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) hosts the Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) which is designed to provide valuable laboratory experience and financial assistance to undergraduates, post-bachelor’s degree holders, graduate students, master’s degree holders, postdocs, and faculty.
PREP is a 5-year cooperative agreement between NIST laboratories and participating PREP Universities to establish a collaborative research relationship between NIST and U.S. institutions of higher education in the following disciplines including (but may not be limited to) biochemistry, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, engineering, electronics, materials science, mathematics, nanoscale science, neutron science, physical science, physics, and statistics. This collection of information is needed to facilitate administrative functions of the PREP Program.
Routine Uses: NIST will use the information collected to perform the requisite reviews of the applications to determine eligibility, and to meet programmatic requirements. Disclosure of this information is also subject to all the published routine uses as identified in the Privacy Act System of Records Notices: NIST-1: NIST Associates.

What We Can Offer
The salary range for the full-time Professional Research Assistant position is $51,000 - $70,000 annually.
The salary range for the full-time Senior Professional Research Assistant position is $65,000 - $80,000 annually.
Onboarding/relocation assistance may be available, however, if within a 12-month period you exercise your right to willfully terminate your employment with the University of Colorado, you hereby agree to reimburse the department for your relocation expenses.

What We Require
- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Advance knowledge and skill in applying theories, principles, and methods of a technical professional field (in science, engineering, iformation technology, or mathematics) and of a specialty within that field.
- Ability to define problems, perform background research, develop, and executive a project plan, organize, and evaluate results, and prepare reports of findings.
- Ability to consider precedents and use judgement to research, select, interpret, modify, adapt, and apply available guidelines to specific problems or issues.
- Ability to present ideas and results in a clear, compelling, and persuasive manner.
What You Will Need
- Professional Research Assistant: Minimum Bachelor’s degree with 1 – 10+ years of experience.
- Senior Professional Research Assistant: Minimum Master’s degree with 5+ years of experience.
