Job Summary

The Niswander Lab within the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology encourages applications for a full-time Professional Research Assistant studying mouse models of embryonic development and birth defects. This position is responsible for mouse animal colony husbandry, lab organization, basic lab maintenance and record keeping for Environmental Health & Safety, solution preparation, and contribution to research studies. Depending on experience and experimental skills, individual research projects could be conducted.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Mouse Husbandry and Genotyping
  • Maintain mouse colonies, perform timed matings, check research rodent diets, conduct PCR genotyping, collaborate with veterinary staff, assist with mouse protocols and animal import/export using TOPAZ, preparation, and handling of IACUC inspections.
Lab Maintenance, Purchasing, and Record Keeping
  • Order and receive supplies, provide oversight of lab cleanliness and supplies, exchanging of gas and liquid nitrogen tanks, conduct weekly EH&S inspections, work with EH&S on chemical disposal, biohazard disposal, and to ensure compliance, prepare common stock solutions, ensure lab equipment is repaired and serviced and equipment certified.
Contribution to Research Studies
  • Become a specialist in primary and immortalized cell culture requiring excellent attention to detail and sterile technique.
  • Assist with mouse work: Dissection, primary cell preparation, embryo culture.
  • Tissue fixation, sectioning, antibody staining, RNA hybridization.
  • Become expert in light and fluorescent microscopy.
  • Troubleshooting of experimental protocols.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this position is $35,000 - $60,000 annually.

What We Require

  • Bachelors degree in the biological sciences.
  • Lab course experience, preferably at the level of CUREs or Discovery lab.
  • Ability to calculate molarity and dilutions and to prepare solutions.

What You Will Need

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as planning and organizational skills.
  • Comfortable working with mouse models.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • More than 1 year of experience in a research laboratory setting.
  • Experience in molecular cloning and PCR.
  • Experience in immunohistochemistry and RNA in situ hybridization.
  • Experience with light microscopy and RNA biology.
  • Experience in mouse husbandry.
  • Training in Bioinformatics and coding.
