The Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) encourages applications for a Professional Research Assistant! The job duties will include experimental work in MEMS and materials research.

Who We Are

PREP is a special partnership between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and CU Boulder. PREP provides research opportunities to CU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers with a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in NIST labs to gain research experience alongside NIST scientists.

The particular group that needs a researcher is the Fatigue and Fracture Group under the Applied Chemicals and Materials Division at NIST.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Assist with testing of MEMS switches at room temperature and cryogenic temperatures: data collection, data analysis, circuit design, and assembly, assisting with crafting and implementing new test methods and test setups.
  • Sample preparation, sample fabrication/assembly/packaging, and micromechanical materials testing.

The salary range at 50% time is $27,000 - $29,750 annually.

What We Require

  • MS in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or related field.
  • Experience in hands-on lab work in any of the above fields.
  • Experience in MEMS or semiconductor device design, cleanroom fabrication, and device testing.
  • Experience with basic analog and digital circuit design, troubleshooting, and testing.
  • Experience with materials testing, or willingness and ability to learn.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills as the project evolves.
  • Comfortable working independently or with a team.
  • Attention to lab safety protocols.

What You Will Need

  • Experience with the following:
    • Electronics testing; RF circuit design, troubleshooting, and testing; writing Matlab and LabView programs; cryogenic cooling; mechanical testing of materials; materials characterization and sample preparation; statistical analysis; design of experiments; using mechanical design software to build engineering drawings and 3D assemblies; machining.
  • Willingness and ability to learn any of the above.
  • Experience with writing project reports, papers, or giving presentations.
