Job Summary

The CU Boulder Police Department at the University of Colorado Boulder welcomes applications for a Property & Evidence Technician. This position is responsible for operational oversight of the Property and Evidence Unit within the University of Colorado Police Department (CUPD). A critical function within the organization, this position is directly responsible for coordinating and directing programs and resources designed to ensure secure, efficient and organized operations of the Property and Evidence Section. This individual ensures all functions and activities comply with established laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Patrolling the campus by foot, bicycle, motorcycle, and vehicle, the CU-Boulder police work diligently with the University community and surrounding agencies to ensure a prompt and coordinated law enforcement response.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Property & Evidence Management and Processing 
  • Responsible for the intake of property, determination of property dispositions, release/disposal of property, provisions of crime scene and other investigative support, and maintaining property submitted through officers or campus departments. 
  • Conduct crime scene processing activities including identifying, collection, preserving and transporting of items of physical and trace evidence, as well as crime scene photography; may involve the use of specialized tools, equipment, and technology.
  • Creates documentation and maintains information within a computer database for the tracking of all property. 
  • Conduct routine audits of property and evidence inventory, corresponding with appropriate persons regarding disposition of property.
Work Unit Lead 
  • Act as lead worker, direct the Fleet/Property & Evidence Technician III or student employees in daily activities directly relating to Property & Evidence management and processing.
CUPD Property Manager 
  • Track and maintain equipment owned by CUPD and arrange for disposal/transfer of surplus property.
Building Access Management 
  • Ensure and maintain building access processes and procedures.
  • Maintain the integrity of controlled operational areas within all departments of the CUPD and Parking Transportation Services (PTS) building.
Other Duties as Assigned 
  • Serve other areas or for other divisions as needed (i.e. Operations or Emergency Management) due to operational needs or unforeseen circumstances, as changes in schedules and/or duties may vary due to operational needs or unforeseen circumstances.

What You Should Know

  • This position requires a valid Colorado driver license.
  • The work hours for this position are generally Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm. However, this position may be required to work extra-duty hours for special events including, but not limited to, home football games, concerts, or other emergency needs that may arise.

What We Require

  • Four years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.
    • Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.
  • Ability to become CCIC/NCIC certified within three months of hire.
  • Successfully pass a thorough background check, including polygraph and psychological examination.

  • Sound understanding of principles used for evidence maintenance and processing.
  • Strong organizational and computer skills.
  • Ability to problem solve and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate well with other employees, outside agencies and members of the public both verbally and in writing.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Previous employment with a Criminal Justice agency, preferably involved with property/evidence handling.

Essential Services
