Job Summary

Facilities Management (FM) at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Recycling Supervisor! This position supervises the recycling collections crew, coordinates the daily route activities of central collection recycling operations, assigns task, monitors progress and workflow, and ensures work standards are being met. The position operates a rear-load vehicle (non-CDL) and a ¾-ton box van to collect and transport material.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Supervision:
Assign recycling operations tasks, monitor work-flow, schedule work, and oversee work performance of recycling staff. Help with customer requests and special collection needs. Establish regular and direct communication with building proctors and other customers. Evaluate safety procedures and notify manager of deficiencies. Participate in the development of recycling work plan, policies, and procedures, in keeping with recycling goals and objectives; provide assistance and resources as needed to conduct special studies and surveys to determine areas for improvements and/or new programs. Implement programs as directed. 
Inspections and Maintenance: 
Perform thorough and routine inspections of all recycling locations to determine areas needing cleaning/repairs/maintenance. Conduct maintenance/repairs/cleaning on recycling equipment such as cabinets and collection carts/bins. Includes scheduled inspections with recycling employees during and after they conduct work. Inspect routes and DVIR records from staff to ensure data is entered accurately. Inspect and make reports and recommendations in assigned areas regarding recycling removal, scheduling, and correction of deficiencies. Regularly inspect condition of equipment for safety, maintenance, and cleanliness. Coordinate with manager to ensure scheduled repairs and maintenance of assigned equipment is complete.
Recycling Collections: 
Work on recycling crew during peak times and staffing shortages. These duties include setting up central collection sites in buildings with clean containers, proper stickers, and correct grade sheets. Load, deliver, and unload recyclables from designated sites on campus and university building to ensure recyclables are collected and recycled. Schedule and coordinate daily can and container pick-up operations, including dispatch of employees to assigned work and preparation of daily route log, direct personnel in route changes as necessary to ensure routes are completed in a timely manner. Collect hard to recycle materials from laboratories using building loading docks and a two-axle box truck. 
Staff Training and Safety: 
Responsible for training all members of work group, following established protocol and procedures laid out by manager. Responsible for training building proctors, maintenance staff, custodians and staff in other departments who may be assisting with recycling programs. Work with department safety coordinator to develop staff safety trainings sessions, keep records of required monthly safety topics and report problems and keep divisional SDS books up to date.
Equipment, supply inventory, and vehicle inspections/logs: 
Maintain inventory of equipment and materials used; determine and request needed budget as part of annual budget process. Maintain inventory of all needed recycling collection/sorting supplies by conducting routine purchases based on a predetermined budget and list of approved products. Maintain routine vehicle maintenance logs and report information to supervisor. Manage end-of-day check-in process, capturing and communicating key service, safety, and equipment issues, ensuring all special events and requests are completed.

What You Should Know

  • This position is eligible for our Facilities Management Employee Referral Program.
  • This in-person positions anticipated work schedule is Monday – Thursday, 5:00 am – 3:30 pm. Weekend and shift work may be required due to special events, projects or scheduling issues.
  • This is an essential services position. Incumbent will respond after hours during emergencies and report to work for regular assigned shift during emergency campus closures to assist with getting the campus re-opened.

What We Can Offer

The annual salary rate for this role is $43,068. 

If you have prior state-classified experience in the same class series as this position, your pay may be set at a higher amount per the state Step Pay Program implemented on July 1, 2024.

What We Require

  • Must have a valid Colorado driver's license. A Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) medical physical from the DOT will be required within 90 days of hire, and training will be provided to the successful candidate. 
  • Two years of job-related experience. 
  • Must be a Colorado resident to apply. 
  • Able to lift 50lbs repeatedly, push/pull loads exceeding 100lbs.

What You Will Need

  • Basic mechanical abilities and understanding of mechanics and hydraulics. 
  • Ability to perform physical work including hauling, lifting, and moving. 
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct other workers, to exercise sound judgment, and to follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Interpersonal skills (works well with other people, professional when dealing with customers).
  • Good reliability and functional computer skills.
  • Skilled at record keeping and reporting. 

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Experience operating 1 and ¾ ton vehicles and able to operate minor hydraulic equipment (lift gates, pallet jack, recycling/trash compactors). 
  • One year of supervisory experience. 
  • A valid Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) endorsement.
