The Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) encourages applications for a Research Associate!  The Long-wavelength Project within the Quantum Sensors Group in the Quantum Electromagnetics Division of NIST’s Physical Measurement Laboratory seeks a researcher to join a multi-person team developing cryogenic sensors for the detection of light at millimeter wavelengths.

Who We Are

PREP is a special partnership between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Colorado Boulder.  PREP provides research opportunities to CU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in NIST labs to gain research experience alongside NIST scientists.
The particular group that needs a researcher is the Quantum Sensors Group under the Quantum Electromagnetics Division at NIST.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Design and test cryogenic sensors such as superconducting transition-edge sensors and microwave kinetic inductance detectors with multiplexing readout systems for arrays of cryogenic sensors. 
  • Develop sensor arrays for the precision measurements of millimeter-wave light. Application areas presently of interest include astrophysics, quantum sensing, and microwave metrology in support of applications in quantum. 
  • Interact with collaborators on the operation and application of cryogenic sensor instruments. 
  • Regularly communicate work status to team members and disseminate results through publications and presentations.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this full-time position is $70,000 - $128,000 annually.

Onboarding/relocation assistance may be available, however, if within a 12-month period you exercise your right to willfully terminate your employment with the University of Colorado, you hereby agree to reimburse the department for your relocation expense.

What We Require

  • A PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Material Science, or related field.
  • Previous experience designing, assembling, and testing cryogenic sensor arrays for precision measurements of millimeter-wave polarized light.
  • Experience with 2D and 3D electromagnetic simulation software, such as Ansys HFSS and Sonnet.
  • Experience with the micro-lithographic layout of integrated superconducting circuits.
  • Proficient with sub-Kelvin experimental techniques required for the characterization of superconducting sensors.
