Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder seeks a Research Development Strategist to lead a multifaceted approach to increase funding for its growing biosciences research portfolio. The Research Development Strategist will implement a comprehensive approach to optimize CU Boulder’s funding success. Responsibilities will include leading the AB Nexus research initiative to strengthen research collaborations between CU Boulder and the Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC); working with Industry & Foundation Relations (IRF) to conduct prospect research to identify new opportunities in the biosciences; and researching and developing intelligence reports on funding opportunities. 

This position reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research in CU Boulder’s Research & Innovation Office (RIO), and will work closely with IFR, faculty, department chairs, associate deans for research, campus leadership, research development personnel, and research administrators.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

AB Nexus – Program Management

The Research Development Strategist, in collaboration with AMC colleagues, will:

  • Administer and increase the visibility of the AB Nexus Grant Program.
  • Proactively identify funding and programmatic opportunities to foster research collaborations.
  • Design and execute events to facilitate research partnerships.
  • Cultivate relationships with faculty across the campuses.
  • Evaluate and track relevant data / metrics.
  • Prepare reports for key partners.

IFR – Strategy and Research

As a part of IFR’s Strategy and Research team, the Research Development Strategist will:

  • Conduct overall pipeline and specific prospect research to aid development officers in holistic strategic engagement focusing on the biosciences.
  • Use data analytics to determine prospect philanthropic focus areas, identify new giving opportunities, provide leadership-level reporting.
  • Support prospect, portfolio, and theme planning, development, and implementation in partnership with development officers.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues in CU Boulder’s various colleges, units, and Institutes in identifying additional data points and funding priorities that would support a holistic strategy.
  • Partner in the production of materials to support campus and system-level collaboration and team strategy meetings, resulting in briefings for development officers or others that highlight interest, affinity and inclination of prospective industry and foundation partners.

Strategic Intelligence

  • Provide key partners with strategic meaningful insights to inform proposal strategy.
  • Assess institutional performance and capacity in a range of fields.
  • Define the competitive landscape in key areas of national interest.
  • Perform analytical studies on a wide variety of programs and issues that are complex in nature.
  • Develop and standardize reports offered to CU Boulder research community.

What We Can Offer

Annual Salary is $80,000- $100,000. Relocation funds may be available.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution.
  • At least five years of professional experience in a similar role.
  • Strong interpersonal skills (written and verbal) and high degree of professionalism.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and tasks.
  • Familiarity with federal, philanthropic and industry research funders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite & familiarity with Excel.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience working with and facilitating interdisciplinary teams to promote collaborative science, especially in the biosciences.
  • Knowledge of the CO bioscience community.
  • Previous experience in research development or at a research institution.
  • Experience with workshop management, coordination.
  • Familiarity with tools and databases to perform competitive intelligence analysis.
