Job Summary

The Precision Laser Diagnostics Laboratory at the University of Colorado Boulder is seeking a driven, multi-skilled individual to support a diverse range of projects as Research Engineer. In this role you will perform design, fabrication, and field support for multiple projects, and serve as technical manager for the lab.

The Precision Laser Diagnostics Laboratory for Energy and the Environment at the University of Colorado develops and deploys laser-based sensors to solve problems across atmospheric, combustion, and industrial systems. The vibrant group is composed of students, professional researchers and engineers with diverse skill sets. We place strong emphasis on entrepreneurship in academic pursuits, from challenging the traditional ways that research has been carried out in a particular field, to actively commercializing technologies that can have a positive impact on our future.  Our current projects range from methane leak detection around oil and gas operations to laboratory studies in support of wildland fire, exoplanetary, and industrial processes.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Hands-On Engineering 
  • Design, fabrication, and field support to facilitate ground-breaking research, including:
    • Instrumentation CAD / fabrication / procurement.
    • Optical design and fabrication.
    • Electronics design and programming.
    • Large-scale facility design and support.
Administration and Organization
  • Manage laboratory facilities.
  • Manage budgeting and procurement of laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Interact with campus and departmental personnel, as well as governmental agencies and collaborators for scheduling and coordination of activities.

What We Require

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience with basic financial management is a plus but not required.
  • Component and System Design and Troubleshooting.
  • Machining (Mill, Lathe).
  • Soldering (Thru Hole & Surface Mount).
  • Programming experience (Python desired, or Matlab/C++ and willingness to learn).
  • Microsoft office proficiency.
