The Aerospace Engineering Sciences department at CU Boulder is seeking applicants for a full-time Mechanical Engineer. The anticipated start date would be as soon as possible.

Who We Are

The position will be located in the new Aerospace Engineering Sciences building at CU Boulder. and will work in the Lightning, Atmosphere, Ionosphere, and Radiation Belts (LAIR) research group led by Professor Robert A. Marshall. The LAIR research group is a part of the Colorado Center for Astrodynamics Research (CCAR). The LAIR research group conducts research on the space environment and its impact on society. The group currently consists of the PI, one research associate, one postdoctoral scholar, nine Ph.D. students, and five BS/MS students. The group is building three CubeSat missions, along with ground-based instrumentation, and conducts satellite data analysis and numerical modeling of various effects in the space environment.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

This engineer will work within the Lightning, Atmosphere, Ionosphere, and Radiation Belts (LAIR) research group, led by Prof. Robert Marshall. The LAIR research group is currently developing three CubeSat missions and an array of ground-based instrumentation to make remote observations in the service of space physics. This engineer will assist in the design, fabrication, assembly, and testing of CubeSat and ground instrument hardware. The engineer will also perform thermal and structural analysis of components, subsystems, and entire systems. With two of the CubeSats expecting the launch in early 2023, integration and test will also be a critical component of the engineer's efforts. This may include designing and fabricating test fixtures, conducting tests, and assisting the team in test data analysis.

What We Can Offer

The salary range is $65,000-85,000 per year, depending on years of experience.

What We Require

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Extensive experience designing in Solidworks.
  • Experience with structural / vibrational analysis in Solidworks.
  • Experience using Thermal Desktop.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • MS in Mechanical Engineering, or BS + one or more years engineering experience.
  • Experience integrating and testing complete systems.
  • Experience machining or working with machine shops.
  • Knowledge of satellite systems, subsystems, and basic requirements.
