Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder Police Department (CUPD) welcomes applications for a Residential Community Safety Operations (CSO Unit) - Security I. The Residential Housing CSO is an important and visible position that is responsible for helping to maintain a safe and secure environment for all CU students, faculty, staff, and visitors in our Housing Areas by detecting and reporting criminal activity and policy violations; the early detection of fires or other extreme and hazardous conditions; and working closely alongside our Police Department’s Patrol Division and CU community members during routine and emergency situation.  This is a Uniformed assignment.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Patrol and Detection of Violations
  • Patrol long distances within all Residential Facilities. 
  • Ensure restricted access areas throughout each facility are maintained and secured. 
  • Detect potential criminal activity and policy violations, investigate, and take appropriate action. 
  • Communicate and record all interactions by writing detailed reports utilizing law enforcement systems. 
  • Recognize illegal substances and/or contraband and comprehend appropriate measures to interact with police to ensure that engagement occurs in a timely manner. 
  • Patrol exterior grounds associated with campus housing areas on foot, bicycle, and vehicle patrols to detect criminal activity and enforce policy violations by taking appropriate action as previously described. 
  • Patrol during all weather conditions and extremes and may be exposed to both emergency and non-emergency situations. 
  • Identify problems, hazards, and threats and then identify appropriate solutions. 
 Report Writing and Documentation
  • Communicate and record all interactions by writing detailed reports utilizing law enforcement systems. 
  • Write reports that accurately reflect that information in a professional manner that will be meaningful in both civil and criminal proceedings. 
  • Provide professional testimony at both civil and criminal proceedings regarding their observations and the facts that they investigated. 
  • Complete the report writing system in a timely manner with very few errors or deficiencies and in many cases with little supervision and support. 
Training and Auxiliary Projects
  • Maintain operational readiness for a myriad of possibilities while deployed on patrol, special events, or emergency situations. 
  • Participate in special projects and assignments that are consistent with the operational needs of the police department and residential community.

What You Should Know

  • Note: Finalists will be requested to complete a Personal History Questionnaire at a later date with CUPD and will be scheduled for a polygraph and psychological examination.  The polygraph will entail disclosure of drug usage and use of illegal substances could result in disqualification.
  • A job-related skills assessment and a full background/personal investigation will be conducted. Failure to pass any portion of a criminal, motor vehicle, and financial background check may result in disqualification.
  • This is an essential services position.  The incumbent is required to respond after hours, during emergencies and report to work for regularly assigned shift during emergency campus closures.  
  • The incumbent must be available to work a flexible work schedule, including long night shifts, weekends and holidays.
  • The incumbent must be able to walk long distances on shifts, sometimes up to 15 miles.
  • The incumbent must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Our campus is a drug-free and alcohol-free workplace.
  • The position is a full-time night-shift position with the Residential Housing CSO Unit.  Work hours and shifts vary but will typically fall between the evening and nighttime hours of 6:30 PM to 3:30 AM (8-10 hour shifts).

What We Can Offer

Hourly starting salary $21.64 (includes the 10% night shift differential).

What We Require

  • Must be a Colorado resident to apply.
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and a desire to work with a wide variety of persons from various backgrounds
  • Must be willing to work weekends, nights, and holidays in all types of weather and conditions.
  • Available to work overtime when needed (i.e., working special events, athletic events, and in case of emergencies).
  • Must successfully complete a criminal, motor vehicle, and financial background check, and polygraph and psychological examination.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and complete campus safe driving training session before driving any department vehicles.
  • Must comply with departmental standards on appearance which includes wearing a department-supplied uniform, body armor, duty belt, and badge.

  • Ability to patrol throughout an 8-10 hour shift, climbing/descending staircases, standing, kneeling stooping, lifting up to 50lbs of equipment
  • Ability to detect odors, smoke, and other issues
  • Crisis Management skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel or similar applications such as Sharepoint

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Previous experience in criminal justice, military, or law enforcement is preferred.
  • Prior experience working in a University environment is highly desired. 
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher is preferred but not required.
