Job Summary

The Research & Innovation Office at CU Boulder is welcoming applications for a Space Domain Awareness (SDA) Postdoctoral Research Associate, who will support efforts to grow Dr. Greg Furlich’s SDA research group. This position will report directly to Dr. Furlich, Research Associate, Center for National Security Initiatives (NSI). The SDA Postdoctoral Associate is responsible for the research and development of algorithms to detect, track, and characterize dim, unresolved targets with data from the SDA and missile warning missions.

The candidate must have a detailed understanding of the current U.S. activities on OPIR and SDA in the national security domain. The candidate should have excellent technical and communication skills and be comfortable working in a team environment.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Work with Dr. Greg Furlich, Principal Investigator and NSI’s Space Domain Awareness Research Lead, to research, design, and develop algorithms, codebases, and documentation for detecting, tracking, and characterization of dim targets in remote sensing imagery.
  • Build deep technical understanding of interdisciplinary remote sensing problems.
  • Assist in the development of research proposals, key research tasks, and deliverables.
  • Effectively share and communicate research results with colleagues, researchers and professionals in industry, government, national laboratories and academia through white papers, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations.

What You Should Know

  • Travel out-of-state will be required.
  • Travel to Colorado Springs is anticipated once a month.
  • Irregular work hours including evenings and weekends may be required.
  • The anticipated start date for this position is November 2024.
  • This is a term-limited, 12-month position renewable subject to satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.

  • The salary offered for this 100% appointment is $85,000.00.

What You Will Need

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated high-level critical thinking and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work within a complex, dynamic, matrixed structure across departments, colleges and university administration and externally with government and industry partners. 

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Experience in development and application of algorithms, traditional and machine learning based, in python or other programming language.
  • Experience in dim target detection, tracking, and characterization.
  • Experience with AI/ML transformer models.
  • Self-motivated and organized.
  • An ability to work individually and collaboratively.
  • An interest in mentoring junior scientists.
  • Current active national security clearance.
