Job Summary
The CIRES communications team seeks a Scientific Communications Specialist, at 50% time (20 hours per week), to support internal and external communications for the institute. This position will be temporary, for at least six-month term (starting July and finishing December 2025 or January 2026), to support communications while a member of the team is on parental leave. This would be a hybrid position with the candidate in office two days a week and remote the remainder of their time.

CIRES is an internationally recognized leader in innovative environmental science and is located at the University of Colorado Boulder. CIRES is CU Boulder’s largest research institute, with more than 900 environmental science professionals advancing research in weather and climate dynamics, changes at Earth’s poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, solid Earth sciences, and more. The CIRES Communications Team amplifies the impact, accessibility, and reach of CIRES science, strengthens the institute’s positive reputation, and increases awareness of the institute’s many accomplishments to its key audiences. Our vision is for key audiences to recognize the excellence, range, and importance of the work CIRES does. The communications team’s responsibilities are varied and include:
External communications: Communicating with audiences external to CIRES, such as reporters, funding agencies, policymakers, and the general public. This includes interacting with reporters who cover CIRES science, managing CIRES social media channels, maintaining brand standards for the institute, and managing CIRES public-facing web content.
Internal communications: Communicating with CIRES researchers, staff, fellows, and other members of the institute. This includes sending institute-wide emails about events, news, and other topics, providing communications training for CIRES researchers, providing design and photography services, and crafting talking points and materials for CIRES leadership.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Building and sending email campaigns to the entire institute and select groups (30%).
- Regularly creating and posting content to CIRES social media channels (30%).
- Updating the CIRES website with news stories and events (20%).
- Occasional tracking and reporting on web and social media analytics (10%).
- Occasional writing and editing of news stories about CIRES research (10%).
What You Should Know
- This is a 6-month, benefited position.
- This is a part-time 50% FTE position (20 hours per week).
- Given team needs, the targeted start date is July 2025.
What We Can Offer
- CIRES can offer a generous compensation package.
- The annual hiring salary range for this position is $27,500 to $42,500 at 50% FTE which is equivalent to $55,000 to $85,000 annually at 100% FTE.
- Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.

What We Require
- A Bachelor’s degree is required for this role.
- At least three years of relevant work experience in science communications.
- Experience working with collaborative software such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Asana, and Google Docs.
- Experience with web content management systems such as Drupal or WordPress.
- Experience with email marketing applications such as Constant Contact or Mail Chimp.
- Experience with social media management tools such as Buffer or Hootsuite.
- Experience creating social media graphics in Canva or other design applications.
