Job Summary

The Office of Information Technology encourages applications for a Senior Agile Project Manager! This role will report to the Director of Portfolio, Process and Service Management in the Office of Information Technology and will provide project management for assigned projects in the IT project portfolio. The Senior Agile Project Manager will be responsible for the management of multiple concurrent high complexity and urgent OIT projects at various lifecycle stages, often managing multiple related projects that are part of a larger IT program. 
This position often be called upon to lead one or more of OIT’s agile teams or to coach individuals or teams on agile processes, tools, or standard practices.
It is the general nature of projects in academia to require flexibility, so a primary element of this role is the ability to be responsive to changes in priorities and flexible with changes in scope, resources or timing related to an assigned project or projects within a specific program.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Project Management: 
The Senior Agile Project Manager will perform overall management of one or more concurrent projects that are critical to CU's business operations and overall mission and be a key driver in the continued evolution of the Office of Information Technology’s Project Management Office (PMO). 

Specific ongoing job expectations include:
  • Set or revise initial project schedules based on the best information currently available (team task estimates, prioritization, scope, resource availability, etc.) and then effectively manage the schedules through the length of the project.
  • Whenever uncontrollable events impact existing schedules, have realistic re-planned dates as quickly as possible.
  • Maintain current project projected release / deployment / implementation dates based on progress to date and best available resource and task estimates.
  • Ensure that project requirements are agreed upon and documented and that any changes go through a defined organizational change process before requirements are added or dropped during the project.
  • Involve the communications, service, support, and operations teams in projects as soon as possible to help ensure that project transitions are as smooth as possible.
  • Actively identify, track, and manage project risks. Ensure that project issues and roadblocks are clearly identified, managed, and promptly advanced to CU and/or OIT Management.
Agile Leadership and Coaching: 
Specific ongoing job expectations include:
  • Facilitate agile team ceremonies. Common examples include daily standups, backlog refinement/planning meetings, demos, and retrospectives.
  • Generate team consensus for sprint/iteration execution.
  • Help the team make progress on the tasks by ensuring each person is working on the right tasks, helping to remove any obstacles to the team members’ progress, and protecting the team from distractions.
  • Perform continuous management of the team backlog in coordination with team leads and/or Product Owners (when applicable).
  • Manage agile boards and coach team members on accountability to committed work through the appropriate tools and processes.
  • Actively communicate and coordinate team needs, progress, and barriers with other teams, managers, and leadership.
  • Act as a mentor to team members on agile principles and standard processes.
  • Cultivate an agile development environment by coaching team members and partners on the agile/scrum process and standard methodologies.
  • Promote a continuous improvement approach within the development team and leads.
  • Flex agile methodologies to support teams across different technical stacks and operation teams, beyond development.
  • Actively participate in the OIT Agile Community of Practice (CoP).

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience from an accredited institution in a relevant field. A combination of education and demonstrable experience as described below may be substituted for the degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • 3 years of project management experience that includes a combination of the following:
    • Managing multiple concurrent projects,
    • Staffing and managing project resources in a weak matrix organization,
    • Risk Management and Issues Resolution,
    • Client and vendor management, 
    • Application of Agile methodologies, including and familiarity with both Scrum and Kanban.

  • Knowledge and expertise in the application of project management methodologies.
  • Very good interpersonal skills.
  • Thorough attention to detail.
  • Ability to mentor, coach, and promote agile standard processes across a team and organization.
  • Non-supervisory experience mentoring other project managers and project coordinators.
  • Experience training others in project management hard and soft skills and standard methodologies.
  • Ability to complete work and motivate change in an inclusive, harmonious environment.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • One or more of the following certifications: Project Management Professional (PMP), PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP), Certified Scrum Master (CSM), and/or Professional Scrum Master (PSM).
  • PROSCI organizational change management certification.
  • Ability to manage scope, time and resources using standard commercially available tools.
  • Experience managing information technology projects that produce enterprise class products and services.
  • Track record of continued and recent education in Agile - including training, conferences, user groups, podcasts, etc.
  • Knowledge of the latest agile recommendations and standard processes - with the ability to flexibly apply standard processes while acknowledging team, departmental and organizational culture and constraints.
  • Experience in completing tasks and motivating change in an inclusive environment.
  • Interest in or experience advancing the missions of public higher education.
