Job Summary

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) in Boulder, Colorado has an immediate opening for a full-time science communications professional to join LASP’s Office of Communication Management (OCM) team. This position will share LASP’s diverse portfolio of space science research, engineering, mission operations, and data systems activities with a wide variety of audiences. The position will have an additional focus on assisting LASP’s Business and Development team with editing and producing proposals.

Who We Are

LASP at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU) began in 1948, a decade before NASA. We are the world’s only research institute to have sent instruments to all eight planets and Pluto.

LASP combines all aspects of space exploration through our expertise in science, engineering, mission operations, and scientific data analysis. As part of CU, LASP also works to educate and train the next generation of space scientists, engineers, and mission operators by integrating undergraduate and graduate students into working teams. Our students take their unique experiences with them into government or industry or remain in academia to continue the cycle of exploration.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Responsibilities will include - but may not be limited to - the following:

  • Work with other OCM team members to ensure that LASP’s accomplishments reach diverse audiences (media, agency and university leadership, other partners, general public).
  • Plan, write, edit, design and produce external communications, including press releases, website content, digital newsletters, fact sheets, marketing materials, event promotions, and digital presentations.
  • Help define communication goals and targeted audiences and work with OCM team members to develop detailed plans and the best channels to accomplish them.
  • Manage day-to-day relations with the media, to include handling journalist queries and interview requests, preparing news releases and media kits, and promoting story lines.
  • Help prepare LASP scientists, managers, and other employees for positive engagement with the media.
  • Maintain records of media coverage and collate analytics and metrics.
  • Work in concert with and report to LASP’s Head of Communications.
  • Assist the LASP Technology and New Business team by editing proposals.
  • Oversee graphics support for proposals.
  • Regularly plan, research, write, and edit digital content for LASP’s social media accounts and engage with followers as appropriate for accomplishing the stated goals.
  • Help curate and create compelling visuals for social media, website posts, and proposals.
  • Act as the primary communications contact for missions and programs as assigned. Develop subject matter expertise, liaise with mission principal investigators, program managers, and scientists, and lead or participate in communication meetings as appropriate.
  • Help facilitate executive and internal communications.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this position is $84,000 - $121,000. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 200% matching for the first 5% contributed with immediate vesting. Relocation assistance is available per institute guidelines.

What We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree.
  • Demonstrated record of excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Previous outreach and/or science communication experience with general audiences; space science research topics preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Facebook, Twitter, Google.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Master’s degree in a science- or journalism-related field.
