As an essential member of the HR team, this position officially reports to the Director of Human Resources. The Senior HR Generalist will provide support services for human resource functions within the School of Education. This is a limited term 80% appointment. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Human Resources Management
- HR Oversight & Appointments:
- Manage all graduate student, adjunct lecturer, and student teacher supervisor appointments in the School of Education (SOE), including summer terms.
- Ensures appropriate approvals have been received via the budget process before positions are updated and created.
- Advises on appropriate appointments for faculty, staff, researchers, temps, and student roles. Verifies that signed offer letters are completed and housed in personnel files, ensures background check and I-9 requirements have been met, collaborates with hiring manager on all on-boarding such as office set-up, first-week itinerary, etc. for all new hires.
- Collaborates with the SOE Finance Team to ensure all new hires, appointment adjustments, and end-of-appointments are entered into HCM and correctly compensated.
- Communicate hiring processes and payroll functions to staff, program chairs, and faculty.
- Draft, process, and track offer letters and appointments in HCM, ensuring compliance with university policies.
- Be responsible for hiring, onboarding, orientation, and reappointment for PhD students, adjunct lecturers, supervisors, faculty, staff, and student employees.
- Collaborate with colleagues in the BUENO Center to track main campus, continuing education, and B3 course proposals, confirm main campus adjunct lecturers, draft offer letters, and set up appointments.
- Serve as a liaison with the HR Service Center for all SOE appointments including faculty, instructors, research faculty, staff, temporary and student employees verifying appointment details, funding,g and terminations, identifying issues, and answering questions related to appointments as they arise.
- Policy & Compliance:
- Interpret and implement CU Graduate School policies regarding appointments, PhD student fellowships, tuition remission, and graduate faculty roles.
- Monitor CU system updates in HCM, MyLeave, and HR processes, ensuring compliance and alignment with university policies.
- Evaluate and update policies, manuals, and forms for GRAs, adjunct faculty, students, and hourly employees.
- Collaboration & Process Management:
- Partner with Finance and other teams to verify budgets and ensure accurate payroll funding.
- Ensures MyLeave timesheets are set up appropriately and submitted for all applicable employees in the programs in collaboration with the SOE Finance Team.
- Monitors leave usage and ensure proper accounting and compliance (e.g., paid and unpaid leaves, faculty parental leave, etc.), working directly with the SOE Finance Team, Employee Relations, and the Office of Faculty Affairs. Requests leave reconciliations/audits as necessary to ensure accurate leave accruals.
- Instruct and train new employees and supervisors on how to complete timesheets and MyLeave, send regular email reminders, and enforce submission timelines.
- Coordinate search and hiring processes, including job descriptions, offer letter addenda, background checks, and onboarding support.
- Records & Systems Maintenance:
- Maintain SOE HR shared drives, employment records, and templates.
- Manage faculty reappointments, sabbaticals, and retirements in collaboration with the Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA).
- Serves as one of the SOE liaisons to the Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA); facilitates completion and submission of all required paperwork in alignment with procedures and target dates established by the Chancellor, Provost, and OFA pertaining to faculty appointments, sabbaticals, and retirements.
Recognition, Outreach, Training and Events
- Plan and execute employee appreciation and recognition events, including service milestones and awards.
- Conduct touchpoint meetings with new hires at 90 days and one year to ensure successful onboarding and engagement.
- Conducts exit surveys and processes resignations; based on findings, conceptualizes & initiates strategic solutions to improve current life-cycle recruiting and retention efforts.
- Facilitates training and workshops, fosters meaningful relationships, and enhances communication to effectively achieve school goals and drive team collaboration.
- Works on monthly and quarterly training audits for and stays current on compliance by notifying employees of upcoming submission dates, sending reminders, and ensuring training completion.
Special Projects
- Develop initiatives to enhance employee engagement, well-being, and workplace culture.
- Continuously evaluate and improve HR processes, including onboarding, professional development, and recruitment strategies.
- Update and maintain SOE website content, such as policies, directories, and resources.
- Represent SOE in campus-wide meetings and contribute to strategic initiatives.
Other Duties
- Collaborate with HR and Finance teams to implement best practices for hiring, onboarding, payroll, and compliance.
- Research and recommend process improvements to increase operational efficiency.
- Run and analyze reports from HCM, payroll, and other HR systems as needed to monitor appointments, funding, leave balances, and compliance. Use data insights to inform decision-making and process improvements.
- Assist the Director of HR with projects and initiatives as needed.
- Support campus initiatives, ensuring alignment with SOE goals and university standards.
- Perform additional responsibilities and special projects as needed to support the HR team and ensure the smooth operation of School of Education functions. Adapt to changing priorities and assist with tasks that align with organizational goals.
What You Should Know
- This is an 80% remote position, with four working days per week performed remotely.
- Occasional trips to campus may be required, determined in consultation with the supervisor and in alignment with school and campus policies.
- The standard work schedule is 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with flexibility to adjust hours as needed, subject to supervisor approval.
- This appointment is expected to begin on April 14, 2025 and run through December 31, 2025.
What We Can Offer
Starting salary range for this position is $66,300 - $80,000.

What We Require
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in Human Resource Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, Social Sciences, or a related field.
- An equivalent combination of education and professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- 5+ of progressively responsible experience in human resources, organizational management, or employment-related procedures.
- Professional experience in human resources and payroll management, ideally within the university setting.
- Demonstrated experience in an HR role at the CU Boulder campus, such as HR Manager or HR Generalist.
- Direct experience with CU Boulder Human Capital Management (HCM) systems, Campus HR processes, and Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) procedures.

What We Would Like You to Have
- Master’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Leadership, or a related field from an accredited institution.
- 7+ years of experience in payroll management and/or human resources at a professional or university level, with demonstrated experience supervising payroll processes and HR functions.
- In-depth knowledge of CU Boulder’s administrative, fiscal, and organizational structures, as well as university-specific policies and procedures.
- Comprehensive understanding of employment-related concepts, including employee relations, organizational development, job evaluation, and recruitment practices.
- Proven ability to interpret and apply complex university policies and procedures effectively.
- Demonstrated initiative in evaluating existing processes and procedures, with a track record of revising or developing new procedures to enhance operational efficiency.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with strong expertise in Excel, Word, and other tools.
- Current professional certification in human resources, such as Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Society for Human Resource Management Certified Professional (SHRM-CP), or equivalent credentials.
