Job Summary
Advancement at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Senior Manager, Internal Communications! The Senior Manager is responsible for writing and editing materials to support internal communications, executive communications and other communications for the Office of Advancement. As a member of the Advancement Marketing and Communications team, this role will support the division’s fundraising and engagement priorities as well as the Advancement Marketing & Communications team’s work to elevate the university’s reputation, drive connection and inspire participation.
As the lead writer and strategist on internal communications, executive thought leadership, divisional meeting support and a liaison to other internal communications professionals across the campus and CU system, this role will develop and implement the internal communications strategy for CU Boulder Advancement. Deliverables include, but are not limited to, weekly and monthly internal newsletters, ad hoc leadership updates, developing and implementing an executive thought leadership platform, developing compelling and engaging remarks for executive leadership and providing general writing support to the Advancement Marketing and Communications team.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Internal Communications
- Create and implement a comprehensive internal communications strategy for CU Boulder Advancement, including content collection and creation, publication platforms and timing, and processes for submitting, reviewing and publishing internal content.
- Develop an internal communications content calendar that aligns key divisional updates with valuable and exciting content for division staff.
- Write and edit talking points and/or remarks for executive Advancement staff, including for external donor and alumni events, internal all-staff meetings, marketing or outreach videos, and other priority events or initiatives.
- Leverage generative AI tools, including large language models (LLMs) and custom GPTs, to enhance internal communications — improving content creation, personalization, knowledge sharing and workflow efficiency.
- Lead internal communications meeting, proactively setting the agenda, developing read-ahead and ensuring the meeting is valuable for attendees.
- Write and edit regular internal updates on behalf of the Advancement division, including weekly leadership messages, monthly newsletters and ad hoc communications as needed. Manage the production and publication process throughout.
- Provide communications support for divisional meetings including writing scripts, talking points and coordinating with divisional partners.
- Develop and manage processes for internal communications creation and distribution.
- Review all internal communications sent to CU Boulder Advancement staff for alignment with division values and culture.
- Review all staff communications from the Advancement Leadership Team for consistency and alignment.
- Maintain confidentiality and discretion during production of sensitive communications or announcements.
- Identify gaps and opportunities in internal communications and make recommendations for optimization.
- Build, schedule and send internal communications using an email marketing platform.
- Use data to iterate and improve internal communications.
Executive Thought Leadership
- Develop and implement an executive thought leadership platform for the Vice Chancellor of CU Boulder Advancement.
- In alignment with the thought leadership platform, develop compelling content for all communications mediums, including but not limited to: LinkedIn, e-mail communications, op-eds, talking points and PowerPoint presentations.
- Proactively identify speaking opportunities (conferences, etc.) for the Vice Chancellor of CU Boulder Advancement and provide support prepping presentations and talking points.
- As needed, partner with the CU Boulder chancellor’s speech writer to create messaging in alignment with campus priorities and initiatives.
- Develop and manage processes for executive communications creation and distribution.
- Proactively stay updated on industry trends and insights to develop compelling and thoughtful content.
- Provide strategic and proactive counsel to Advancement leadership for executive communications.
General Writing Support
- Write and edit stories of impact featuring CU Boulder alumni, donors and other constituents.
- As needed, provide writing and editorial support for philanthropy content, which may include gift announcements, impact reports, cases for support and/or proposals.
- As needed, provide writing and editorial support for CU Boulder’s award-winning Coloradan alumni magazine.
- Provide proofreading support to the Advancement Marketing and Communications team and the broader division.
- Other writing duties as assigned.
Partner Collaboration & Support
- Serve as the primary point of contact for the CU System internal communications team, regularly submitting CU Boulder content to newsletters.
- Serve as the primary point of contact and provide support for the CU Boulder Advancement Leadership Team as it relates to internal communications matters. This includes advising on talking points and communication strategies.
- Proactively partner with colleagues in CU Boulder’s Strategic Relations & Communications team to actively promote and amplify relevant campus-wide messages to the Advancement division.
- Serve as the communications partner for CU Boulder Advancement’s Organizational Excellence committee.
- Collaborate with Advancement event staff to create central messaging that aligns with event goals and broader university efforts.
What You Should Know
- This position has the ability to work a hybrid schedule with some days on campus and some days remote.
- This position will occasionally be required to work evenings/weekends
What We Can Offer
$68,000- $78,000. Relocation assistance is available within Advancement guidelines.

What We Require
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
- Experience: 3+ years of professional, job-related experience.
What You Will Need
- Impeccable writing, editing and proofreading skills, including a strong and demonstrated ability to create compelling, clear and accurate content for diverse audiences.
- Excellent communications skills and ability to develop and maintain interpersonal relationships.
- Determined demeanor and ability to develop daily work objectives given project goals and set timelines.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and set priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently as well as on a team and adapt to changing priorities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and Internet navigation tools.
- Fluency with Associated Press (AP) style.
What We Would Like You to Have
- 5+ years of writing experience in a professional setting, including experience with internal and/or executive communications.
- Software Used: Microsoft Office products, donor tracking software (Salesforce), Zoom, Teams, LinkedIn, Asana, Drupal, WordPress, ChatGPT and Copilot and other project and content management software.
- Experience creating and implementing a comprehensive internal communications strategy.
- Experience building and sending emails through an email marketing platform.
- Experience using data to improve internal communications.
- Project management experience and familiarity with project management software.
- Experience working with a broad spectrum of communications media, including print, web, video and other digital technologies.
- Experience with Agile project management.
