Job Summary

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) encourages applications for a Senior User Experience Researcher to lead user-centered research efforts of our User Experience Research & Design Team (UXRD) at the University of Colorado Boulder! The UXRD team takes a people-centered approach to understanding and designing solutions for CU Boulder’s sophisticated online landscape, with an eye to improved effectiveness and efficiency.
This role will work closely with the UXRD team, which includes UX/UI designers, a content strategist, and student employees, to understand user needs and help advise on improvements to CU’s online tools and experiences. This position resolves research questions, timelines, methodologies, and recruitment for user inquiries. The Senior UX Researcher actively collects, analyzes and shares information and data about user needs and requirements with technical staff, administrators, and campus leadership, and makes recommendations to help OIT and the CU Boulder campus better understand the needs of our students, staff and faculty. 
This position will support the UXRD team in expanding our UX services and in supervising metrics to evidence the impact of our work.
This position actively works to foster high engagement of student users in UXRD activities and supports the UXRD Program Manager in promoting a user-centered culture at CU Boulder.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Support the Boulder campus to improve the usability of online tools and processes by:
  • Using UX research methods (including interviews, surveys, usability studies, focus groups, diary studies, card sorts, design walkthroughs, design feedback sessions) to capture user preferences and understand the user experience with a CU tool or process.
  • Planning and facilitating research and design activities with campus offices, OIT, and users to develop design solutions (e.g. wireframes, recommendations) that meet the needs of business offices and students. 
  • Collaborating with OIT teams, especially UX designers, business analysts and developers, to translate user findings into designs and usable interfaces or processes. 
  • Supporting the continued student-centered research, design and development of CU’s student portal, Buff Portal, launched in 2020 by the Unified Student Experience project to unify the online student experience. 
  • Using data from website analytics, such as Google Analytics, to advise user research studies and impact tracking, and using data visualization tools such as Google Data Studio to present that data.
Support the UXRD team as we continue to grow and expand our services and offerings to the campus by:
  • Informing the continuous improvement of the UXRD’s research approaches, data-collection and analysis, and logging of past studies.
  • Identifying insights across research studies and our work with users to share out as recommendations or standard methodologies for user-centered experiences on the CU Boulder campus and beyond.
  • Helping to craft the story of the impact of the UXRD team’s user-centered approaches, including supporting the team’s efforts to use data to evidence success, and writing and speaking publicly about our work to OIT and campus partners.
  • Providing mentorship and professional development for the team’s student employees and other CU Boulder students who want to develop a better understanding of user-centered approaches.
Create and cultivate a community of users, especially student users, to participate in UX research activities by: 
  • Identifying innovative and user-centered ways to regularly include individual students or other target users in UX research and design activities.
  • Involving student groups in the research, design, and change process to further their understanding of these approaches and show students that CU is actively working to improve their experience. Examples of this might include partnering with student-led clubs, student project teams, and academic classes. 
  • Coordinating communications, recruitment, and incentives with users, including identifying further opportunities for engagement.
Professional development and additional responsibilities:
  • Maintain proficiency, deepen, and acquire new knowledge in user experience research and human-centered design.
  • In addition to the responsibilities outlined above, this position may assume additional responsibilities and perform special projects as needed or directed by the UXRD Program Manager.

  • This position is in a hybrid work situation, with the majority of work being performed remotely.

What We Can Offer

  • The salary range is $82,000-$87,000 per year.

What We Require

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution.
  • 3+ years in user experience research or user-centered research: 
    • Creating various kinds of research studies; 
    • Analyzing research findings (quantitative and qualitative data) to understand a user experience with technology; 
    • Visualizing research data to communicate user needs and goals, and using those findings to make recommendations and improvements to the user experience. 
    • Graduate Degrees can substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

What You Will Need

  • Superb communication, collaboration, time management, and presentation skills.
  • Deep understanding of standard methodologies in human-computer interaction and user-centered research, data gathering, data privacy, and data analysis.
  • A passion for advocating for the user.
  • Capable of navigating an academic environment or equivalently sophisticated organization, especially in developing and managing relationships with key partners (e.g. faculty, administrators, students, and staff).

What We Would Like You To Have

  • 2+ years working as a UX researcher with UX/UI designers and developers.
  • Experience working with students or another comparable user group.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Experience working with Google Analytics and Google Data Studio.
  • Experience working on agile software development teams; experience with Jira.
  • A passion for interpreting and understanding qualitative data.
  • Background in psychology, learning theory, ethnographic research or other comparable fields.
  • A Master’s degree or PhD from an accredited institution.
  • Experience working on a highly collaborative team.
