Job Summary

The Chancellor's Office at the University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for the Senior Vice Chancellor of Operations. The Senior Vice Chancellor of Operations is a key executive leader responsible for the operational management of the university’s core administrative functions. Reporting directly to the Chancellor, the Senior Vice Chancellor provides visionary leadership and operational oversight to multiple divisions, including Human Resources, Information Technology (OIT), Health and Wellness, Compliance, and Public Safety. This role is instrumental in supporting CU Boulder’s critical initiatives and ensuring operational excellence, financial sustainability, and a culture where everyone matters and all can thrive.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Strategic Leadership & Institutional Alignment
  • Serve as a senior advisor to the Chancellor, contributing to the campus’ long-term planning and operational decision-making.
  • Develop and implement institutional strategies that align with the university’s mission, values, and goals.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement throughout operational units.
  • Establish and communicate clear performance expectations, ensuring alignment between operational units and the university’s strategic vision.
  • Lead efforts to enhance cross-functional collaboration, ensuring seamless integration of resources and services across the university.
Operational & Administrative Oversight
  • Provide executive oversight to Human Resources, Information Technology, Compliance, Health and Wellness, and Public Safety to ensure efficiency, effectiveness, and responsiveness.
  • Ensure risk management, compliance, and safety protocols align with recommended practices and regulatory standards.
  • Supervise investments in technology to support institutional growth and innovation.
  • Enhance operational efficiency through data-driven decision-making, process improvements, and strategic resource allocation.
Executive Leadership & Team Development
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing leadership team, fostering professional growth and accountability.
  • Establish a culture of collaboration and shared responsibility across operational units.
  • Implement leadership development programs to build institutional capacity and ensure succession planning.
  • Promote a workplace culture that ensures a supportive and inclusive environment where all individuals can thrive.
Financial Management
  • Develop and manage the budget for assigned areas and departments, ensuring alignment with established organizational budget protocols.
  • Implement effective financial controls, including comprehensive budget planning, development, and resource allocation.
  • Conduct financial analysis and reporting to monitor budget performance and inform decision-making.
  • Implement cost control measures to manage expenses and improve financial efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with financial regulations, audits, and reporting requirements.
  • Collaborate with financial leadership to optimize resource allocation and enhance funding strategies.
  • Maintain open communication with collaborators regarding budget expectations, performance, and adjustments.
  • Promote continuous improvement in budget processes and practices to enhance financial management.
Partner Engagement & Institutional Representation 
  • Act as a university liaison with state agencies, governing boards, system administration, and external partners, as directed by the Chancellor.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with campus administrative and academic leaders, faculty, staff, students, and external partners.
  • Represent the university in key legislative, regulatory, and industry forums, as directed by the Chancellor.
  • Serve on university-wide committees and task forces, as directed by the Chancellor.
Data-Driven Decision Making & Institutional Effectiveness
  • Leverage institutional data, analytics, and performance metrics to drive informed decision-making.
  • Implement systems for continuous improvement and institutional effectiveness assessment.
  • Ensure the university employs a data-informed approach to resource planning and policy development.

What We Can Offer

  • The annual salary range for this position is $325,000 - $415,000

What We Require

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a related advanced degree and 8 years+ of progressively responsible management experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Significant executive leadership experience in a large, complex organization, preferably in higher education.
  • Proven experience in strategic planning, operational management, financial oversight, and policy development.
  • Strong understanding of organizational effectiveness, data analytics, and risk management.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Extensive leadership experience at an R1 university or a large public institution.
  • Experience leading institution-wide transformation initiatives.
  • Knowledge of emerging trends and recommended methodologies in higher education administration, compliance, and institutional effectiveness.
  • Experience working with state agencies, accreditation bodies, and regulatory entities.
  • Experience managing multiple operational areas, including Human Resources, IT, and Public Safety.
