Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a Student Health Insurance Program Coordinator! This role oversees the administration of the University’s Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP), including enrollment, waiver processing, eligibility and student education. This position serves as the campus subject matter expert for student health insurance requirements and processes, ensuring compliance with University policy and regulatory standards while supporting student access to health coverage. The coordinator provides functional oversight of one full-time Assistant Director, Insurance and Referral Services, and collaborates closely with campus partners to ensure accurate implementation of insurance-related processes impacting more than 38,000 students annually.

The Wardenburg Medical Clinic provides a wide range of health care services for students including: primary care for illnesses and injuries, as well as chronic conditions, physicals, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, allergy shots, vaccinations, travel health care, and concussion care.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Student Health Insurance Enrollment and Waiver Oversight

  • Oversee the required student health insurance enrollment and waiver process for the University’s CU Gold Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).
  • Ensure students subject to the insurance requirement either enroll in SHIP or submit a waiver demonstrating comparable health insurance coverage meeting University criteria.
  • Administer waiver processes through the designated insurance portal during established enrollment and waiver periods each term.
  • Ensure waiver criteria, timelines, coverage requirements, and consequences of non-compliance are clearly communicated to students and parents.
  • Be responsible for the review and verification of waiver submissions to confirm coverage meets minimum requirements, is active for the appropriate coverage period, and aligns with institutional policy.
  • Manage processes to ensure students who do not complete a waiver by published timelines are automatically enrolled in SHIP and billed appropriately, and that approved waivers result in accurate credits or reversals.
  • Serve as the primary campus point of contact for waiver-related escalations, appeals, policy interpretation, and exception requests.
  • Coordinate with third-party waiver administrators, insurance carriers, and consultants to resolve waiver issues, track statuses, and improve operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with campus offices including Admissions, Registrar, Bursar, Athletics, Graduate Student Programs, New Student & Family Programs, ect. to align waiver outcomes with enrollment data and billing cycles.

Education, Outreach, and Communication

  • Lead campus-wide education and outreach efforts related to student health insurance requirements, plan benefits, waiver criteria, and timelines.
  • Serve as a trusted insurance resource for students, parents, faculty, and staff by explaining insurance terminology, coverage requirements, and compliance obligations in clear, accessible language.
  • Partner with divisional communications staff to develop and distribute clear, timely messaging related to insurance enrollment, waiver processes, and key timelines.
  • Represent Health and Wellness Services at orientation, welcome events, and university-wide initiatives.

PAC Team Duties

  • Be responsible for student eligibility determination, default enrollment, billing, refunds, and reconciliation of insurance premiums through student accounts.

What You Should Know

This is an in-person position with an anticipated work schedule of Monday – Friday during regular business hours. This role is not expected to work University recognized holidays, weekends, or evenings and will not be on call at any time.

The salary range for this position is $58,728 - $64,100 annually.

What We Require

Two years of experience working in a healthcare or compliance setting. Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute on a year-for year basis.

  • A bachelor’s degree in any field.
  • Two years of technical or specialized experience in health insurance administration, medical records, or related healthcare operations.
  • Experience interpreting insurance policies, eligibility requirements, enrollment processes, and waiver criteria.
