Job Summary

The Masters of the Environment Professional Graduate Program (MENV) at the University of Colorado Boulder (UCB) invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor of Environment and Natural Resources Policy (ENRP). Part of UCB’s Department of Environmental Studies, MENV seeks a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure-track Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor for the ENRP specialization, for which this individual will also serve as ENRP faculty lead.

The successful candidate will possess significant academic as well as professional experience in environmental policy, planning, and/or law, including public lands and natural resources, water, climate change/resilience, and other areas, with an emphasis on equity and inclusion. The candidate will have a deep understanding of the critical environmental and natural resources issues we face as well as the role of governance and policy in addressing them. MENV is also interested in candidates with expertise in climate change and climate resilience, and associated societal, regulatory, and governmental responses.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

This is a nine-month, full-time, academic-year appointment at the rank of either Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor. It may include additional (compensated) summer responsibilities. The position includes teaching, advising, administrative duties, and potentially research/professional work:

Faculty Lead

  • Serve as faculty lead for the ENRP Specialization. Oversee and develop the curriculum, engage faculty in curricular development, coordinate faculty instruction, and advise students.

Teaching

  • Develop and teach in-person professional graduate courses in the ENRP specialization and MENV electives.

Engage with External Stakeholders

  • Develop and facilitate relationships with external organizations and serve as a resource for the relevant external stakeholders.

Capstone Advisor

  • Advise MENV students in experiential learning projects.

Support Student Recruitment, Retention, and Reactivation

  • Work with the MENV program faculty and staff to support student recruitment, retention, and placement into impactful careers.

Research and Creative Work

  • Depending on the candidate background and interest, this position may also include engaging in research or creative work related to professional practice for a small fraction of their time (i.e., 10%). This involves a) demonstrating a deep understanding of professional practices in leadership b) demonstrating impact and innovation within the professional practice; and c) engaging in research and thought leadership relevant to the field.

All faculty are expected to contribute service to the program, including serving on committees; developing and facilitating relationships in the professional field to curate student learning opportunities; and supporting student recruitment, retention, and placement.

What We Can Offer

  • We can offer a competitive academic year salary, commensurate with experience and qualifications, in the range of $65,000-79,000 for the Teaching Assistant Professor position, or $80,000-90,000 for the Teaching Associate Professor position. 
  • This position is a full-time 9-month position (mid-August through early May) with an initial three-year contract appointment that can be renewed. 
  • It may also include a part-time summer contract with associated compensation at the same rate.

What We Require

For the Teaching Assistant Professor rank:

  • Graduate degree (e.g., PhD, MS, MA, MBA, JD) or close equivalent in relevant field.
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate, graduate, or professional level, which may include experience as a graduate teaching assistant or equivalent (e.g., teaching or training as an environmental professional); OR professional experience in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated experience and passion for teaching, shown through course/curriculum development, integration of service learning, teaching innovation, or development of effective pedagogical methods.
  • Record of delivering professional development (e.g., delivering workshops, presenting at or organizing conferences).
  • Some demonstration of outreach, civic engagement, or service in the community or in other areas that utilizes expertise.

For the Teaching Associate Professor rank:

  • Graduate degree (e.g., PhD, MS, MA, MBA, JD) or close equivalent in relevant field.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience as Teaching Assistant Professor or equivalent; or the equivalent number of years in relevant professional practice.
  • Demonstrated experience and passion for teaching, shown through course/curriculum development, integration of service learning, teaching innovation, or development of effective pedagogical methods.
  • Strong record of delivering professional development (e.g., delivering workshops, presenting at or organizing conferences).
  • Demonstrated thought leadership (research, publications, presentations) that contributes to a strong professional reputation.
  • Demonstrated and sustained outreach, community engagement, or service in the community or in other areas that utilizes expertise.

  • Experience teaching and developing curriculum for programs that include one or more of the following:
  • Professional education, higher education learning, extension school, facilitation, technical assistance, and/or corporate learning.
  • Professional leadership experience at the director level or above.
  • Strong connections with industry, nonprofits, and/or government to facilitate student opportunities.
  • Experience dealing with complex issues, multiple business functions and/or stakeholders with varying interests.
  • Evidence of engaging diverse communities and creating strong partnerships.
  • Experience in creating innovative learning experiences.
