Who We Are

The Center for Advanced Decision Support for Water and Environmental Systems (CADSWES) within the Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering Department at CU-Boulder conducts research and development centered on river, reservoir and hydropower planning and operational decision-making, decision-making under deep uncertainty, and resilient and sustainable management of water resources in a changing climate. CADSWES develops and maintains scientific software that is used extensively in the US and abroad. (See CADSWES and RiverWare.) Funded by multiple large water management agencies, the software is continuously and actively developed to keep up with evolving user needs and advances in numerical modeling, graphical user interface, data visualization, and platform technologies.

This is your chance to find meaning in your day job by contributing to the sustainable management of scarce water resources. We seek an experienced technical writer to join a small, interdisciplinary team of researchers and developers who conduct scientific research and bridge the gap between science and practice through production of innovative, widely used decision support software tools.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

In this position, you will work with university faculty and the research and development team to:

  • Assist with developing and editing user guides for water management software; you will be responsible for the production of final user guides in multiple formats, including web-based formats.
  • Assist with producing training materials for online and in-person training classes.
  • Write content for web pages.
  • Assist in creating effective PowerPoint presentations.
  • Assist in production of internal and external reports.
  • Coordinate and provide editing support for technical publications and research proposals.
  • Stay current with new technologies in authoring tools, presentation software, and other technologies used for technical communication.
  • Provide guidance and standards for writing.

Final candidate must be a United States citizen or permanent resident.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this position is $70,000 to $85,000 per year.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a related field, preferably in science, communications, journalism, or English.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience with technical writing and communication.
  • Highly skilled in writing with thorough knowledge of grammar and technical writing style.
  • Portfolio of science or technology-related writing.
  • Must be a US citizen or permanent resident.

  • Experience with PowerPoint, and advanced word processing tools.
  • Good interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Organized, efficient self-starter.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Experience writing software user guides and training materials.
  • Knowledge of Adobe FrameMaker, markdown languages, and WebWorks ePublisher tools.
  • Knowledge of natural resources, especially water resources management.
  • Knowledge of AI technology to assist end-users with accessing documentation.
