Job Summary

The Department of Biochemistry at CU Boulder is a forward-thinking organization, specializing in advanced methods, that is committed to leveraging the latest in technology to drive innovation and efficiency. We are looking for a skilled IT Specialist to join our team, bringing a proactive approach to managing our IT infrastructure and supporting our data-intensive computing needs.

The IT Specialist will be responsible for managing and supporting Linux servers, implementing new software, and performing hardware maintenance. The ideal candidate will possess a solid foundation in system administration, familiarity with GPU-assisted computing, and a keen interest in optimizing computing resources. You will be responsible for developing strong relationships with CORE facility directors and with Colorado University Research Computing (CURC) staff functioning as mediator to facilitate the needs of departments working on CURC high-performance computing systems. Anticipated start date December 2nd 2024.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Manage and maintain Linux servers, including monitoring system health, performing updates, and troubleshooting issues.
  • Write and maintain shell scripts for automation and routine maintenance tasks.
  • Download, install, and implement new software applications as needed for the department.
  • Perform routine software upgrades to ensure optimal functionality and security.
  • Replace hardware components as necessary to maintain server and workstation functionality.
  • Support GPU-assisted computing setups, including maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Manage data transfers and organize storage solutions to facilitate seamless data access and security.
  • Implement and manage workload scheduling on high-performance computing systems.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to identify and address IT needs and support technical projects.

This is a temporary position with an hourly salary of $40.00 per hour.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 1+ years of experience in Linux server operations and administration.
  • Proficiency in shell scripting for automation and task efficiency.
  • Demonstrated experience with software implementation and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of GPU computing setups and familiarity with CUDA.
  • Ability to perform hardware replacements and upgrades as needed.
  • Strong organizational skills for data management and data transfer tasks.
  • Excellent communication skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Certifications in Linux or system administration.
  • Experience with high-performance computing environments including job schedulers (e.g., Slurm).
  • Experience creating and configuring virtual machines on cloud computing platforms.
  • Familiarity with other programming languages or scripting tools used in system administration.
  • Familiarity with different biological data types.
