Job Summary

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Colorado (CU) Boulder seeks applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Trustworthy and Scalable AI Systems. We invite candidates from all areas of computing to apply. The specific focus of this position is inter-disciplinary, spanning the broad areas of computer systems, programming languages, software engineering, formal methods and artificial intelligence. Modern AI systems draw heavily on advances in computer architecture, compilers, programming languages and computer security. Reasoning about the safety and fairness of these systems involves techniques from automated reasoning that have been studied in the areas of programming languages and formal methods. Conversely, AI and Machine Learning techniques are impacting how we design, implement and operate computing systems. Automated reasoning/theorem proving tools that underlie formal methods now use ideas from machine learning to speed up proof search and improve human interaction. To carry out research in these emerging and highly interdisciplinary areas, we seek candidates with interests that span artificial intelligence and one of our focus areas of computer systems and/or programming languages. This position is anticipated to be hired at the Assistant Professor rank; however, qualified candidates may be considered at the Associate Professor or Professor rank.

The Department of Computer Science is the fastest growing and largest department within the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder). The department is home to 50 tenured and tenure-track faculty plus 25 instructional faculty, and now includes about 2000 undergraduate and 500 graduate students. We have a reputation for foundational and applied research in Programming Languages, Systems, and Software Engineering. This search aims to continue our prominence in these areas and deepen interdisciplinary collaborations with faculty working in the broad area of AI across different departments.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Successful candidates will be expected to engage in undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring; develop an externally funded research program in their technical area; contribute professional leadership and service to their unit, the college, and their professional community; and cultivate and contribute to the inclusive excellence of our academic community.
  • The typical distribution of work for this role is 40% teaching, 40% scholarly and creative work (research), and 20% leadership and service.

What We Require

  • Applicants must have earned a research doctorate in Computer Science or a related discipline before starting their appointment.
  • Candidates being considered for appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor rank must meet University standards and unit criteria for tenure and promotion to the designated rank. These criteria generally include having an established and ongoing program of original research, a strong publication record, a demonstrated ability to obtain external funding, and a record of high-quality teaching and mentoring.
