Job Summary

The University Memorial Center (UMC) at CU Boulder is currently accepting applications for a Custodial Services Manager! This position is responsible for supervising and assisting with cleaning and maintenance UMC facilities to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. More specifically, this role provides supervision, training, and administrative support to the custodial staff to ensure compliance with university policies, safety regulations, and standard methodologies.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Administrative Duties & Supervision of Custodial Operations
Provide daily supervision and hands-on support to custodial staff to maintain cleanliness and safety throughout the UMC.
Assign and supervise cleaning tasks, which include but are not limited to:
  • Sweeping, dust mopping, and wet mopping floors.
  • Vacuuming carpets and removing stains as needed.
  • Emptying and sanitizing trash receptacles.
  • Buffing, stripping, and waxing floors.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, break rooms, and other public areas.
  • Washing windows, walls, and other surfaces.
  • Performing periodic deep-cleaning tasks.
  • Ensure all cleaning is performed according to university standards and in compliance with health and safety regulations.

Develops Work Schedules and Daily Assignments:
  • Create and maintain work schedules for custodial staff to ensure adequate coverage and efficient use of resources.
  • Adjust schedules as needed to accommodate staff shortages, special events, or seasonal workload fluctuations.
  • Approve overtime or adjust individual work hours to maintain cleaning standards.
  • Assign daily tasks and ensure staff accountability through regular check-ins and performance monitoring.
Develops and Implements Cleaning and Maintenance Procedures:
  • Establish, update, and enforce cleaning and maintenance guidelines and protocols.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate janitorial products, tools, and equipment.
  • Work with vendors and product representatives to test and implement new cleaning solutions and techniques.
  • Ensure all custodial staff are properly trained on new and existing cleaning procedures, equipment operation, and safety practices.
Administrative Support for Custodial Operations:
  • Recruit, onboard, and monitor staff performance.
  • Review and manage employee work hours using the university timekeeping system, making necessary adjustments for missed punches or scheduling discrepancies.
  • Order cleaning supplies, equipment, and uniforms to maintain adequate inventory levels.
  • Coordinate special projects, deep-cleaning tasks, and periodic maintenance initiatives.
  • Maintain detailed records of custodial staff performance, training, and evaluations.
Building Safety Responsibilities:
  • Perform access-related tasks to ensure the UMC is properly secured during non-operating hours.
  • Conduct routine inspections of doors, windows, and restricted areas to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Collaborate with campus security and building management to report safety concerns and implement preventive measures.
Cross-Departmental Support:
  • Assist and collaborate with other UMC departments when needed, including providing support for special events, facility setup, and coordination with UMC Events Planning & Catering.
  • Communicate effectively with university staff, maintenance teams, and event coordinators to ensure custodial services align with broader operational needs.
Snow Removal and Equipment Maintenance:
  • Assist with snow removal efforts to maintain safe walkways, entrances, and ADA access points.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance on custodial equipment, such as:
  • Replacing vacuum belts and filters.
  • Tightening screws, bolts, and fittings on restroom fixtures and dispensers.
  • Adjusting cleaning machines for optimal performance.
  • Coordinate with UMC Maintenance personnel for major equipment repairs and replacements.

What You Should Know

The anticipated schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 4:30pm. Some nights, weekends, and after-hours response may be required.

What We Require

2 years experience in custodial management or facility maintenance supervision.

What You Will Need

  • Effective Communication: Ability to clearly convey expectations, procedures, and feedback to staff, as well as professionally interact with students, campus partners, and vendors.
  • Leadership & Team Management: Skilled in supervising custodial teams, providing training, resolving conflicts, and fostering a positive, productive work environment.
  • Planning & Organization: Capable of scheduling staff, managing resources, and coordinating support for daily operations and special events.
  • Knowledge of Custodial Operations: Solid understanding of cleaning procedures, safety regulations, equipment use, and sustainable cleaning practices.
  • Problem-Solving & Flexibility: Able to quickly adapt to changing priorities and resolve issues in a high-traffic, dynamic campus environment.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Prior experience managing custodial operations in a higher education, student union, or similar public-facing, multi-use facility.
  • Certification or training in custodial supervision, facilities management, or related areas (e.g., BOMA, ISSA CMI, IFMA, or OSHA certifications).
  • Experience implementing sustainability initiatives in custodial operations, such as green cleaning programs or waste reduction strategies.
