Job Summary

The Office of Precollege Outreach and Engagement at CU Boulder welcomes applications for Resident Advisors! Advisors (RA's) are responsible for ensuring the wellness and overall positive experience of University of Colorado Upward Bound Program summer participants. RA's serve as valuable program resources and have many different leadership responsibilities. Some of these responsibilities include being first-responders, forming relationships with and among their residents/peers, and serving as a positive peer leader. RA's also must enforce CUUB standards and University policies to ensure safety and cultivate environments that are welcoming and conductive to living and learning. 

RA's are selected for their leadership skills, interpersonal abilities, capacity for partnership, positive and compassionate attitudes, and sense of responsibility. RA's are responsible for fostering and facilitating a positive community among residents, promoting a safe and comfortable living environment, and serving as a representative and role model for the University and the Upward Bound Program.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

The responsibilities of a Residential Advisor are extensive and require flexibility when working in a constantly evolving environment. Some of the responsibilities include, but are not limited, to: 
Student Contact:
  • Supervise 8-12 low-income/ first generation high school students from target communities.
  • Communicate regularly with residents through daily RA meetings, text messaging, bulletin boards, etc.
  • Encourage interaction among students and recognize the various perspectives within the community.
  • Assist students with academic, personal, and social concerns.
  • Mediate conflict between students and staff using conflict resolution skills.
  • Transport students in 12 or 15 passenger vans.
  • Demonstrate overall leadership in applying the mission, vision, and O.U.R F.I.R.E values of CUUB.
Program Safety:
  • Serve in on-call duty rotation which includes being readily available and able to be contacted.
  • Serve as a Mandatory Reporter.
  • Confront and document inappropriate behavior.
  • Assess and make decisions in emergency situations swiftly.
  • Ensure all students follow the safety protocols established by CUUB and the University.
  • Ensure all students abide by the check in policy and the buddy system and hold late students accountable.
  • Community Development:
  • Assist students in establishing and maintaining CUUB and University standards.
  • Encourage and contribute to the development of an environment that involves the participation of all students.
  • Facilitate and implement strategies that connect students with each other.
  • Uphold CUUB code on conduct, O.U.R F.I.R.E values, all University and residential hall policies.
  • Provide a supportive and approachable space that encourages open lines of communication between you and students.
  • Provide information enabling students to adjust to the Boulder community and benefit from the college experience.
Teamwork:
  • Work closely with the Residential Supervisors and the Directors.
  • Create positive and supportive communication with University staff and other program coordinators.
  • Participate in all trainings, daily staff meetings, and nightly residential staff meetings.
  • Establish and maintain positive and supportive communication with peers, supervisors, and directors.
  • Work together with students, supervisors, and directors to cultivate a supportive and welcoming environment.
  • Empower and support fellow RA staff, supervisors, and directors.
  • Practice positive workplace relationships with fellow staff and other program coordinators.
Administrative:
  • Assist director/assistant director with projects and program documentations.
  • Update Blumen database.
  • Perform copying and filing as needed.
  • Create program flyers and itineraries.
  • Print weekly schedules and meeting agendas.
  • File student records.

What You Should Know

  • This is a temporary role that will last from June 1st - July 19th. The schedule is anticipated to be approximately 36-40 hours per week. A schedule will be provided in advance. Each RA will receive 2 days off per week after the first week of training.
  • This role must pass University required background check.
  • This position will attend a required week long orientation before student arrival, beginning June 1st and will commit to spending the full 7 weeks on CU Boulder campus.

What We Can Offer

The hourly range for this full-time position is $18-$25.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Have a valid driver's license.
  • Embody the CUUB mission, vision, and values throughout the summer, as employees of the CUUB program, as colleagues to fellow RAs, and as role models for CUUB participants (Visit https://www.colorado.edu/precollege/cu-upward-bound-program to learn more).
  • Have prior experience with the CUUB program.
  • Have experience in youth work (advising or mentoring students).
  • Have an educational/lived experience that reflects that of CUUB students.
  • Have experience supervising and working as a part of a team.
