Job Summary

The College of Arts & Sciences welcomes applications for a Web & Publications Design Coordinator. This position reports to the Director of Communications and External Relations and collaborates with other communications professionals. The position is a key part of the Arts and Sciences communications team.

The Web and Publications Design Coordinator provides high-quality creative services to meet strategic communications goals through an assortment of publications, electronic communications, and Web and social-media sites, and assists in event planning and photography database supplementation and management for the College of Arts and Sciences. Specific functions include design and distribution of marketing materials, creation of photography and video assets, content creation for social-media sites, invitations and electronic newsletters, and creation of other materials to support college strategic initiatives and programs.

The position works as part of a team but is an individual contributor expected to take responsibility for a variety of tasks or projects, many of which require advance planning, coordination, research, evaluation, graphic design, writing and database skills. The position works with departments in the college and with the broader community of CU Boulder communicators, academics and outside vendors. The incumbent in this position will be tasked with prioritizing communications that support student recruitment, student-retention and donor-development efforts in the arts and humanities.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Graphic and Web Design for Marketing Communications
  • Duties involve developing a design concept to meet marketing and communications goals, researching printing costs, gathering information and writing or editing content in conjunction with the “client” or unit, implementing the design and layout, proofreading, and managing final production by the printer.
  • Collaborating with the Arts and Sciences communications team, which meets regularly to plan and produce communications, promote brand strategy and coordinate communication practices throughout the college.
  • Serving as an integral part of the decision-making process for projects, services and direction that have graphic-design and e-media components.
Web, Broadcast Email and Social Media Content Creation 
  • Serving as key content contributor for the website, including the A&S magazine website.
  • Overseeing and creating art for A&S publications—helping to organize the collection, and managing all its manipulations (sizing, cropping, photoshopping, formatting).
  • Creating, formatting and sending broadcast emails.
  • Developing electronic newsletters and invitations as part of Arts and Sciences Communications and Alumni Relations team.
  • Developing multimedia enhancements for the college web and social networking sites; helping to maintain social networking presence to meet strategic communication goals.
  • Managing and monitoring the College’s contact databases.
  • Monitoring and analyzing e-mail blast statistics to inform communication decisions.
  • Writing and editing as needed. Such tasks include but are not limited to writing short stories or reframing news releases for use in the A&S magazine, and posting notices of published books written by A&S faculty.
  • Performing ongoing web maintenance as needed to make sure all A&S website pages function properly and are up-to-date.
Special Events
  • Develop communication materials to support and publicize various special events, and assists other team members with planning and coordinating special events, which might include alumni-outreach events coordinated by the dean’s office.
  • Provide photography, illustration and video services at the direction of the Director of Communications and External Relations.

The anticipated starting salary is $50,000.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university.
    • Additional related experience can substitute for the required degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • At least two years of experience in graphic design, communications, public relations, or journalism.
  • At least two years of experience with electronic and print publications.
  • Familiarity with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Mastery of Adobe Creative Cloud applications (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).

What You Will Need

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including knowledge of grammar, punctuation and modern principles of English usage.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced and complex environment.
  • Ability to develop relationships with people of diverse backgrounds and experience.
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations and priorities.
  • Knowledge of graphic design tools (specifically Adobe Creative Suite) for production of printed materials, and DSLR cameras for photography and video production.
  • Familiarity working with print production companies.
  • Familiarity with applications for maintaining websites and creating and distributing electronic newsletters.
  • Knowledge of social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

  • Demonstrated record of writing clearly, succinctly and with panache.
