Job Summary
The University of Colorado Boulder in collaboration with the Nez Perce Tribe Wildlife Division, is seeking 1–2 undergraduate students and/or recent college graduates to support research and monitoring efforts to create a wolf population occupancy model using non-invasive techniques including camera traps, howl surveys, and acoustic monitoring. This position is part of a broader dissertation project led by Alma “Rosie” Sanchez (PhD student at University of Colorado Boulder & Carnivore Biologist with the Nez Perce Tribe).

Who We Are

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Assist with deployment and maintenance of camera traps and autonomous recording units (ARUs)
- Participate in howl surveys and wolf sign identification
- Track potential rendezvous or denning sites (non-invasively)
- Conduct data entry, organization, and photo/audio file review
- Attend training in chemical immobilization and field safety
- Participate in team meetings with CU Boulder and Nez Perce Tribe Wildlife Division staff
- Engage in reflective practices and discussions on conservation, sovereignty, and science
What You Should Know
- Knowledge and experience of/on the physical area (Nez Perce Reservation) of study
- Interest in wildlife biology or related fields
- Willingness to work in rugged field conditions and variable weather
- Reliable and communicative; able to work independently and as part of a team
- Enrolled undergraduate student or recent (within 2 years) graduate
- Must be able to travel to Hardin, MT for training (mileage/lodging/registration covered)
- No previous field experience required – all training will be provided
What We Can Offer
Compensation (up for discussion):
- If 1 intern is selected: Approximately 34 hrs./week @ $20/hr. or 31 hrs./week @ $22/hr.
- If 2 interns are selected: Approximately 17 hrs./week @ $20/hr. or 15 hrs./week @ $22/hr.
- Location: Home base will be the Wildlife Division in Lapwai, ID. This is non-negotiable. Field sites on the Nez Perce Reservation and surrounding Treaty Territory.
