Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Professional Research Assistant! This position will support NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information’s (NCEI) work on the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite space weather data products. The Space Weather Team within NCEI is responsible for supporting NOAA’s space weather mission and for ensuring the operational and scientific utility of NOAA’s space environmental data. 

Our Scientist will support the DSCOVR instrument scientists in the calibration and validation of the DSCOVR space weather data products to ensure the products are of high scientific quality for the user community. The CIRES-NCEI space weather group is also involved in the Space Weather Follow-On (SWFO) solar wind mission and this position may lead to future involvement in the SWFO mission.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Improve the scientific quality of the DSCOVR science level space weather products.
  • Investigate product anomalies, data gaps, and spikes in the DSCOVR data archive and developer/implement correction algorithms.
  • Validate the DSCOVR data archive by comparisons with nearby satellites.
  • Undertake or collaborate in scientific research using DSCOVR data.

What You Should Know

The position will be located within the Solar-Terrestrial Physics Branch of the NCEI Center for Coasts, Oceans, and Geophysics (CCOG) at the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, Colorado. The selected finalist will be required to pass a federal laboratory background clearance for site access.

Given the level of required security clearance for this position, U.S Citizenship or Permanent Residence (Green Card) is required.

What We Require

  • U.S citizenship or permanent residency (Green Card) is required for this position. 
  • Bachelor's degree in (Physics, Astronomy, or other similar scientific/engineering field) required.

  • Masters or Ph.D. in Space Physics, Solar Wind Physics, or similar fields.
  • Experience analyzing space-based instrument science data. 
  • Experience analyzing time series data.
  • Experience programming in a scientific computer language (e.g, Python, Matlab, IDL, etc..).
