Job Summary

I&R Business Services at CU Boulder encourages applications for an Accounting Manager! The Accounting Manager’s budgetary and financial responsibilities cover a combination of Facilities Management services, such as, Operations and Maintenance, Distribution and Storage, Utilities, Transportation, and Planning, Design and Construction. This role supports Facilities Management by developing, implementing, evaluating and monitoring operating and capital budgets. This position will lead a team of accountants to complete the annual budget development process, including charge rate analysis and budget presentations. The Accounting Manager will oversee ongoing financial reporting and evaluate general ledger speedtypes for transactional accuracy and appropriateness, while ensuring departmental accounting practices follow GAAP and align with all applicable federal, state and University rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Who We Are

The Infrastructure & Resilience (I&R) Office is responsible for an annual operating budget of $112 million. Areas of responsibility include long-range capital planning, architecture, design and construction, the operation and maintenance of all campus facilities and utilities, transportation services, workplace accident prevention and the creation of a safe working environment for campus employees, environmental health and safety, campus logistics, and efforts around sustainability and resiliency.

Beyond creating a safe and secure environment at CU Boulder, the department is embarking on several projects that are key to the strategic vision of the campus including: crafting a clear and comprehensive framework and methodology for campus master planning, developing strategies and tactics to improve campus sustainability and resiliency, and dynamically working within the campus and with our community partners to positively impact humanity.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Accounting and Reporting

  • Ensure timely reporting to department fiscal managers on operating and renewal and replacement budgets to actual financial transactions and work with appropriate personnel to analyze variances. Review monthly financial reports, including detailed transactions and comparisons with prior year financial results, to help ensure the appropriateness of transactions and budgetary compliance. Facilitate resolution of issues identified through variance analysis. Prepare management reports and notify responsible parties about problems in a timely manner. Use various software applications to gather billing data and create custom financial reports for the accounting team and fiscal managers as needed. Review business processes to determine adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls, accuracy of data and compliance with state and university policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

Budget and Finance

  • Facilitate the department's budget and rate development process by analyzing revenue and expenditures to provide guidance in constructing an appropriate budget. Work with the appropriate personnel to continually improve the budget process. In coordination with staff accountants, prepare fully burdened charge rates, including labor and materials and overhead, applying complex Microsoft Excel-based budget models and cost accounting methodologies. Present the results of budget analysis to the appropriate supervisor, manager and directors. Educate cost center managers on effective budgeting techniques. Assist with evaluating accounting and other business processes, recommending and implementing changes to improve efficiency and quality of service.

Staff Supervision

  • Directly supervise staff, adhering to all applicable state and university rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Develop a positive, inclusive work culture. Provide ongoing coaching for staff members and complete performance reviews within established timelines. Provide timely feedback to staff regarding concerns related to productivity or the quality of work completed along with guidance to help address the concerns. Encourage professional development and provide opportunities for staff to participate in activities based on individual goals and department objectives.
  • Assist with special projects as assigned.

What You Should Know

  • This position has an anticipated work schedule of Monday – Friday during regular business hours.
  • We anticipate this position will support a hybrid format (remote and in-person work).

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this position is $85,000 - $88,675 annually.

What We Require

Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field from an accredited college or university. Two years of related professional work experience, with experience supervising full-time professional staff. Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

What You Will Need

  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Excel.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective collaboration and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across different campus partners and skill levels within this profession.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Five years of progressive work experience in finance, accounting, and/or business administration.
  • Two years experience supervising full-time professional staff.
  • Government or higher education work experience, specifically with budgetary and fiscal responsibilities.
  • Robust understanding of cost accounting and rate development.
  • Utility and/or construction accounting experience.
  • Experience with billing software applications and ad hoc reporting.
