We coordinate with University Risk Management regarding campus safety liabilities/risks and develop programs to proactively address issues; develop and implement occupational safety programs that work to reduce risk management liabilities and claims, and coordinate responses to critical campus incidents and ensure appropriate hazard mitigation and remediation for hazardous materials incidents in full compliance with local, federal, and/or state regulations.

  • Facilitate the update of chemical inventories by EH&S staff, as requested by research staff.

Workplace Compliance Inspector

  • Perform workplace inspections to ensure compliance with rules and regulations and improve campus safety culture.
  • Perform inspections of areas where hazardous materials (e.g., chemicals, radioisotopes, biological materials, lasers and other forms of non-ionizing radiation) are used or other physical hazards may be present as required by state and federal requirements to ensure compliance with occupational health and safety program elements.
  • Ensure instances of non-compliance identified during inspections are resolved in a timely manner and take appropriate actions if users fail to resolve non-compliance issues.
  • Work with research personnel and other campus departments, including building managers, facilities management, and department management to facilitate corrective action resolution, as necessary.
  • Maintain records related to inspections performed in database management systems.
  • Report inspection metrics, as necessary.

Regulated Waste Management Assistance

  • Assist the Biological Safety Officer, Chemical Safety Officer, Radiation Safety Officer, or other waste manager with waste management assistance.

  • Pick up and transport wastes generated on campus to the EH&S facility.
  • Bulk wastes from smaller containers into larger containers and move containers within the EH&S TSDF.
  • Ensure accurate records are maintained as required by specific waste management program.

EH&S Training Assistance

  • Participate in the development and maintenance of EH&S training materials.
  • Create and maintain training modules designed to educate faculty, staff and students on the potential risks and requirements of working with hazardous materials, specialized equipment, and in various work environments. This requires the use of software programs used to design training modules (for example, Articluate) and a Learning Management System to host and track the trainings.
  • Interact and correspond with faculty, students, and staff to provide technical information about EH&S and training requirements.
