Job Summary
Utility and Energy Services at CU Boulder encourages applications for an I&C and Electrical Distribution Systems Technician! This role performs highly skilled technical work in the operation, maintenance, inspection, adjustment, calibration, and repair of the campus wide industrial grade Utility Instrumentation and Control (I&C) Systems used for heating, cooling, and power generation. The positions will also troubleshoot plant equipment as problems occur to minimize equipment downtime.
The Utility & Energy Services Group is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient production and distribution of steam, chilled water, domestic water, stormwater, sewer, and electricity at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Who We Are
Utility and Energy Services is responsible for the design, operation, maintenance, and repair of the campus’ energy generation and distribution infrastructure for steam (heating), chilled water (cooling), and electricity. We provide the campus community with reliable utility services in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner and offer measurement, line locating, performance engineering, regulatory and data management services.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Diagnose, calibrate, read, repair, install, and modify utility instrumentation, and process controls. Work with the Operations Group to ensure equipment and devices are working as intended.
- Troubleshoot, calibrate and repair transmitters, pressure switches, controllers and any other devices related to the control and operation of the plant and utility distribution systems.
- Willingness to learn about all aspects of plant and utility distribution systems.
- Conduct tests and commissions, and inspect all installed equipment for proper operation, balance, sequence of operations and assembly of components, ensuring compliance with CU Standards, codes, manufacturer's handbook schematics, project specifications, as-built drawings, diagrams, and blue prints.
- Maintain documentation of all repairs, calibrations, control points, and alarm and trip points of each piece of equipment; prepare schematic drawings, point-to-point diagrams, control loops, sketches and reports to indicate changes or adjustments made to plant systems.
- Assist in the overhaul of gas and steam turbine generators, boilers, and centrifugal chillers, pumps, motors, and other equipment.

What We Can Offer
- The salary range is $78,000 – $85,000, depending on experience.

Be Statements
What We Require
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- 2 years of experience in maintaining, repairing, preventative maintenance, installing, modifying, and calibrating instrumentation and process controls in an industrial, chemical, or utility plant. Possess strong electrical background.
What You Will Need
- Ability to effectively troubleshoot and repair basic electrical issues.
- Able to read and understand PLC programs and ladder logic.
- Thorough knowledge of utility distribution system safety and environmental compliance requirements.
- Knowledge in electronics, ModBus, and IT Ethernet communication.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Problem solving and ability to think independently.
- The ability to work independently and in a team setting.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office software products.
What We Would Like You to Have
- CCST level I or equivalent experience.
- Proficient in using P&ID, loop sheets, SEMA drawings, ladder logic and block logic.
- Experience with HART Rosemount transmitters and handheld communicator.
- Experience with various calibration equipment and procedures for pressure and flow.
- Emphasis in electrical distribution systems preferred experience.
- Experience operating Combustion Gas Turbines, HRSGs, Electric Chillers and Steam Boilers.
- Training from a military, accredited institution, or graduation from an apprenticeship program on boilers, turbines, steam, energy, power, heat transfer and power plant instrumentation, control and monitoring systems.
