Job Summary
The LASP IT Director will oversee the strategic direction, development, and implementation of IT systems and solutions across the lab including data center operations and sponsored programs. As a visionary leader, the Director will drive innovation, ensure robust cybersecurity, and optimize IT infrastructure to empower LASP’s mission in aerospace research. Collaborating closely with LASP researchers, scientists, engineers, the CU Office of Information Technology (OIT), and external partners, the Director will deliver tailored IT solutions that meet program requirements and uphold regulatory compliance. This position reports to the LASP Executive Associate Director.
Who We Are
LASP is a world-renowned space science research institute at the University of Colorado Boulder employing over 700 scientists, engineers, support personnel, and students. The University of Colorado receives more NASA funding than any public university in the country, due in large part to LASP programs. Professional engineers work closely with scientists and assembly technicians in designing and building space flight hardware while helping mentor students as entry-level engineers working on these programs. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Leadership and IT Infrastructure:
- Develop and execute the IT strategy in alignment with LASP's objectives and industry standards.
- Champion LASP’s IT capabilities to internal stakeholders and external partners, fostering collaboration and visibility.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance through mentorship of the IT department.
- Develop and manage the IT budget, optimizing resources and controlling costs.
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies and trends in the aerospace industry, integrating them into LASP's IT strategy.
- Assess IT operations to identify gaps, streamline processes, and propose solutions to lab leadership.
- Oversee IT staffing and workload distribution, ensuring team capacity aligns with project demands.
- Ensure IT infrastructure (networks, servers, cloud services) is secure, scalable, and reliable.
- Coordinate with OIT for high-performance computing resources to support complex simulations and data analysis.
- In collaboration with the LASP Web Team, implement and maintain collaboration tools, including Confluence and JIRA.
- Work with divisional Tools Teams to optimize overall resources and maintain consistency in policies and procedures.
Project Management:
- Direct and oversee IT projects from planning to completion, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
- Manage relationships with external vendors and service providers, negotiating contracts and ensuring service quality.
- Provide IT support for ongoing and future projects as requested.
IT Security and Compliance:
- Implement robust cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive lab data and systems from threats.
- Ensure all IT operations comply with required federal regulations and standards, including data protection and privacy laws in coordination with OIT and sponsored research funding requirements.
- In coordination with, CU OIT, LASP Senior Leadership, and Export Control, oversee the Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) programs as they relate to IT architecture and security controls.
- Oversee all IT security and compliance initiatives for the lab.

- This position offers a hybrid work schedule with at least three days a week onsite at LASP.
What We Can Offer
- $190,000- $215,000.
- Eligible for relocation assistance.

What We Require
- Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in IT management, with at least 8 years in progressively responsible leadership roles.

- Advanced project management expertise, with a track record of delivering complex IT initiatives on time and within budget.
- Deep expertise in cybersecurity, IT infrastructure, and high-performance computing tailored to research environments.

- Strategic problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to address complex technical and operational challenges.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, adept at collaborating with researchers, engineers, and external stakeholders.
What We Would Like You to Have
- Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in information technology, computer science, or related field..
- Industry-recognized IT certifications (e.g., CISSP, PMP, ITIL, or equivalent).
- IT experience in an aerospace environment.
- Familiarity with cloud computing, AI, and machine learning.
