Job Summary

Utility and Energy Services at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Maintenance Technician! This role is housed in the Utility & Energy Services Group which is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient production and distribution of steam, chilled water, compressed air, medium voltage electricity, potable water, sewer, and storm drainage utilities at CU Boulder.

This position operates, maintains, and repairs the potable water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and/or other distribution systems. The role performs highly skilled maintenance on these distribution systems, including observing systems, operating valves, adjusting and repairing meters, inspections for regulatory compliance, and completing work assignments safely and efficiently to restore or improve the reliability of systems being maintained.

Who We Are

Utility and Energy Services is responsible for the design, operation, maintenance, and repair of the campus’s energy generation and distribution infrastructure for steam (heating), chilled water (cooling), and electricity. We provide the campus community with reliable utility services in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner and offer measurement, line locating, performance engineering, regulatory and data management services.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Conduct tests and inspections of installed utility distribution systems located in utility tunnels, buildings, maintenance holes and direct buried piping for proper operation, balance, and assembly of components. Ensure compliance with manufacturer's specs, campus standards, as-built drawings, diagrams and blueprints. Perform plan review on proposed projects and complete inspections for civil utility infrastructure.
  • Coordinate and/or perform preventive, predictive, emergency, or corrective maintenance of civil and other utility distribution system components, including disassembling, cleaning, repairing and/or replacing, reassembling and coordinating between internal collaborators and/or contractors.
  • Document all repairs, calibrations, and control points of each piece of equipment; prepare schematic drawings, sketches and reports to indicate changes or adjustments made to the distribution systems.
  • Perform Distribution Outages to support projects, maintenance, and emergency work.
  • Assist the mechanical distribution and metering groups as needed.
  • Assist in the overhaul of gas and steam turbine generators, boilers, and centrifugal chillers, pumps, motors, and other equipment.

What You Should Know

  • This is an in-person position with a work schedule of Monday – Friday during regular business hours.
  • This position may work after-business hours or weekends.

The salary range for this position is $69,252 - $80,741 annually.

What We Require

  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Four (4) years of relevant experience OR a combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience equal to 4 years.

What You Will Need

  • Ability to review and interpret as-built construction drawings and blueprints.
  • Basic computer literacy skills.
  • The ability to work independently and in a team setting.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Emphasis in utility scale chilled water, domestic water, and/or stormwater distribution systems. Thorough knowledge of utility distribution system safety and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Confined space certification.
  • Training from a military, accredited institution, or graduation from an apprenticeship program on boilers, turbines, steam, energy, power, heat transfer and power plant systems.
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management or Asset Management Systems.
