Job Summary
Postdoctoral Position in Observational Extragalactic Astrophysics with JWST - University of Colorado, Boulder.
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position to work in the Extragalactic Astrophysics group in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder with Prof. Erica Nelson. In this position, the candidate will conduct research related to the formation and evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes at z>5 with JWST/NIRSpec spectroscopy and supervise graduate and undergraduate research projects. This could include spectroscopy of “universe breaker” galaxies / little red dots (LRDs) (JWST-GO-4106) to determine what powers their emission and what the implications on our understanding of early galaxy formation might be; the physical properties, chemical evolution, and star formation histories of early galaxies; reionization; and/or the early growth histories of supermassive black holes. New ideas and research proposals in the field of early galaxy evolution are also encouraged.
The start date is flexible, ranging from now to September 2025. The appointment will be for an initial period of two years, with renewal for a third year contingent upon satisfactory progress.
The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.
Who We Are
The Center for Astrophysics and Space Astronomy (CASA) is dedicated to advancing our understanding of the Universe in which we live through observations and theory. Founded in 1985, CASA is an affiliated unit within the structure of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences (APS) Department at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- The applicant will work collaboratively with Professor Nelson to build an understanding of how early galaxies form and evolve.
- New ideas and research proposals in the field of early galaxy evolution are also encouraged.
What We Can Offer
- The position includes a competitive annual salary (range $75,000 - $80,000), research/travel funds, and access to telescope and supercomputing facilities.
- You can expect to collaborate with a group of scientists that will celebrate strengths, value diverse perspectives, and work to ensure an equitable scholarly experience for all.
